Ease for first time buyers

5
We ended up with Santander mortgages through a mortgage broker. It was our first property purchase and we had no idea what was out there or what half the financial jargon meant. Santander happened to be the cheapest. Our mortgage offer was accepted and they were great with communication. We had several questions in terms of repayment and fees. These were all explained to us thoroughly (in terms we could understand) and followed up in writing. They also advised on a bank account we could use that would give us cashback on our mortgage payments and other bills. I found these extra bits of advice really helpful and seemed like they cared about the best products for their customer rather than just pushing the products. We were on a fixed rate mortgage which was great for first time buyers as it gave us time to get established and understand our bills and an indicator of how much we had coming in and going out each month. When it came to renewing our mortgage as the fixed term had run out, we did shop around, but Santander continued to be the best for monthly payments (and we fixed for 5 years). They again followed up all conversations with confirmation in writing in terms that can be understood by those without a financial degree and I find that in-store the staff are really knowledgeable. I like the fact that they allow an overpayment of about 30% I think before you incur any fees. I think it encourages overpayments on your mortgage. We did have to pay slightly more each month for having a fixed deal for 5 years (this went up from 1 yr, 3 yr and 5yr) but this was minimal for us and gave us peace of mind. I wouldn't hesitate to get more of their products and renew my mortgage with them. I highly recommend them to friends and family who are looking for mortgages as well. Reviewed on: 7th May 2017
