No frills, no issues

Nothing special

I have had an account with RBS for 18 years, and have just moved to the Bank of Scotland as they have a much better account. I have not had any problems with RBS, their staff have always been friendly. However, the actual Select Account is nothing special, it's very basic. I had a visa debit card but for some reason RBS refused to give me a contactless card (I asked twice, and have never had problems with the account!). I have had an account at TSB for a few years now which has a contactless card, as has my new Bank of Scotland account. RBS also don't pay interest on their Select Account (both the TSB and Bank of Scotland do pay interest), and the interest rates on their savings accounts are terrible. They do have another reward account which pays cashback on direct debits, but there is a monthly fee so I wouldn't earn that much switching to it as my bills are quite low. All in all, RBS are okay. The account is basic, it's nothing special. I think I have found better accounts elsewhere. So while I would not tell people to avoid RBS, there are much better accounts out there. It's a current account, nothing more, nothing less,it just is. Nothing stands out.

There are so many providers offering products and add ons with their current accounts. I think RBS lacks this facility and is falling behind compared to other banks. With all RBS's bad press I would suggest it rectifies this anomaly. Reviewed on: 17th January 2017

Current Account

Not much to say really. The basic current account is ok for me. It does what I need. Transfers are easy and can get overdraft if needed. No faults really just a basic account. Reviewed on: 15th January 2017

Basic Basic Current Account

It does what it says on the tin. Staff are very friendly and it's easy to get in touch with someone to rectify a problem. However, I recently went in branch to query setting up a help to buy isa, only to find out that RBS was not taking part in the scheme. The reason stated was the cost to RBS didn't make it viable. I am therefore looking for a new account as every other bank seems to have understood the bigger picture in this. Reviewed on: 24th November 2016

Service is poor

I changed my account to a non fee paying basic account but I did not realise that they were still charging me the fee for the premium account Reviewed on: 15th November 2016

Basic account, no frills but no cost. Not sure if it is better to stick with this or try one of the many fancy, monthly cost, accounts that apparently give all sorts of benefits/rewards.

Looking at Reward accounts with RBS. Sceptical. Do I need it, will I be better off, or will the bank be better off. They tell me I will be so I should trust that a reputable bank wouldn't lie? Reviewed on: 4th May 2016

Only been with them a short time and had a few issues. Not the best bank so far

Have had delays on wages not long after joining. Not what you need from a bank Reviewed on: 18th February 2016

Good app makes life a little easier

I feel quite indifferent about my bank but I do love my banking app on my phone which makes transfers between my accounts quick and straightforward and checking balances very easy, no more worrying about having insufficient funds! I couldn’t be without my banking app now! Reviewed on: 16th February 2016

Adequate but never satisying

I use a variety of branches of my bank. I have only had a good experience in one. My two closest branches are the most disappointing. I have been given false information, refused a receipt, abused for asking for a receipt, perpetually lectured about online banking which I don't want and attended a hilarious mortgage meeting where they could give me no information at all "because rates could change" even though I looked up the info on their website. I did learn that their ex-husband refuses to pay maintenance and that their son sits around in their pants playing computer games. More Jeremy Kyle than the Help to Buy meeting I requested.
