Nearly lost me a home

First they increased the monthly fee from £2 to £5...then they cut the interest rate from 3% to 1.5%...well ok that's market forces at work, I guess I understand...but what really got my goat? When we moved house earlier this year, I needed to transfer a lump sum for a rental deposit...Santander blocked it because it "didn't fit my regular spending pattern". Well of course not, moving house is not a regular occurrence! There was easily enough money in the account to cover it, but despite having received certified proof that I'm a grown up when I opened the account Santander seem to think they have the right to stop me spending my own money! When I asked what I could have done to prevent this, they said "nothing, as it's automated" - how comforting! I got £30 compensation, but that's nowhere near enough for the stress of nearly losing the home we wanted (&needed) and the embarrassment of the letting agents and landlord treating me like a wanted criminal. Am looking to switch in the very near future. Reviewed on: 21st November 2016

Santander employee acting like a fraudster

A person recently phoned me, who claimed to be Santander employee and asked me to state my Date of Birth "to pass security". At that point I had no way of knowing, whether this really was a Santander employee calling me, or a fraudster fishing for my personal information. Guess my surprise, when a few weeks later, I learned that this really was a genuine Santander employee !? I complained to Santander about this practice, but they have the audacity to defend their practice, and do not want to change their security policy. This sets a dangerous precedent. If Santander acts in a way, that customers can not distinguish a genuine Santander employee from a fraudster, this is exactly what the fraudsters want, because it helps them to clear out people's bank accounts. THIS ACCOUNT GIVES CASHBACK ON UTILITIY BILLS AND SOME SPENDING - UP TO 3 PER CENT. IT'S NOT A LOT BUT FOR BILLS AND SPENDING ALREADY COMMITTED TO ITS NICE TO GET SOMETHING BACK ON TOP OF THE INTEREST. Reviewed on: 6th June 2023

Very good but not perfect

Generally speaking my experience with Santander bank has been positive. However, there are one or two niggling inconveniences. For example, when setting up a standing order, if a date for payment coincides with a Bank Holiday, the customer if not forewarned about this and the standing order request is unsuccessful. It is only when the bank is contacted that the problem is explained and the customer needs to go through the whole setting up process again. Reviewed on: 2nd June 2023

Supporter of Fossil Fuels

I left Santander, after 20+ years of loyalty, when I discovered they continue to provide banking services to the fossil fuel giants who continue to reap huge profits and devastate the future for our children, by continuing to extract and develop carbon based fuels as opposed to diverting ALL their efforts and amassed wealth into non carbon based energy solutions. The banks and the governments seem to be ingrained in our on-going short terms support of these giants who have made good from the earths resources, but refuse to make good for the future.
