Shocking service

I've never had such consistently bad service from any company as I have had with SLC. In order to prove that I had resigned from a job and was unemployed, I had to submit 14 different pieces of evidence and go through multiple phone calls. After all that, they incorrectly changed my status to 'self-employed'. The online system for registering as working overseas makes no sense. The first question asks 'when did you leave the UK?', yet if you're moving from one overseas job to another, there's no advice on how to answer that. The lack of a functioning online system and email service, meaning phoning is the only option, is really challenging when you work abroad. It feels like you're further penalised for working abroad (and out of the PAYE system) by ridiculously low repayment thresholds, for example paying back a % of everything I earn over £7000. I went through the painful process of changing my overseas job details this month, which seemed relatively pain free compared to previous interactions. I then got a letter in the post with the amount I'll have to pay back based on the evidence I have given. I then got a letter the day after specifying a different amount to pay back, stating that this was because I had given no evidence (incorrect). Last year I got a letter outlining my remaining balance, which was different to what showed online for the same date. I would give 0 stars if I could. I guess this shows what happens when there is no competitor in the market. The government should really take some responsibility for this, as they endorce/force students to use this company. Great account!

I really like the flexaccount with nationwide. You get rewarded interest on your account each month, and can make an extra £100 by reffering a friend. I went through the process and it was really quick and easy. I also like how I don't get charged for swift transactions. Highly recommended! Reviewed on: 22nd November 2019

Very helpful staff who go out of their way to help you (Kendal branch).

I travel a lot for work and I've often run into problems that HSBC has helped me out with. I once had my debit card stolen and it was difficult to get a replacement while I was abroad. However, the helpful staff at Kendal branch enabled me to get a new card promptly, and they also suggested making my mother a signatory to my account so that she can authorise such processes in the future should a similar situation arise. Fairly good value, helpful customer service, however high excess cost.

I have used the Backpacker Gold travel insurance with Insureandgo. I always found the staff really helpful and friendly when dealing with queries. The insurance is comprehensive. The only negative is that the excess is quite high, so if you have a smaller medical issue then the costs don't usually exceed the excess, so you end up paying for smaller costs yourself (which can mount up over time if you have various illnesses/incidents). So overall I think this product would be improved if the cost of the excess was lowered. Reviewed on: 9th August 2015

Great customer service

I have progressed from a student account to a graduate account and have been with HSBC for a number of years. I am primarily with them because I work abroad frequently and they really have branches everywhere! However, the highlight of my experience is from the staff at a UK branch, in Kendal. Anytime I have experienced a problem while abroad, they have worked to fix it asap and have helped me out of a number of fixes. They even give me a cup of tea whenever I pop into the branch.
