Terrible customer service, withdrew my application

I received a pre-approved offer and decided to take them up on it as it was something I was considering doing for some time. I have a Barclay credit card and have had good experiences with it. After filling on the online form, I was asked to call them back to answer a few more questions. After 30 minutes of being grilled about everything from the last purchase I made to my ex-wife from 12 years ago, I withdrew my application and said it wasn't worth the inquisition! I have decent (740) credit and do not understand the logic for the level of questions being asked.
