Managing Money with Revolut: My Honest Review

5
My experience using Revolut has been largely positive and surprisingly smooth. I started using the app a little over a year ago, and since then, it has become one of my primary tools for managing finances—especially when it comes to travel, budgeting, and everyday spending. From the moment I downloaded the app, I was impressed by how quick and easy the onboarding process was. All I had to do was enter some basic personal information, verify my identity with a photo of my passport and a short selfie video, and within a few minutes, I had access to a fully functional digital banking account. The app’s interface is clean, modern, and intuitive, even for people who might not be very tech-savvy. I was able to find everything I needed without any external guidance. At first, I used Revolut mainly as a backup card for occasional online purchases, but it didn’t take long before I started using it regularly for day-to-day expenses. I added money to my Revolut account by linking it to my main bank, and once that was done, transactions were instant. Using the card, whether physical or virtual, felt just like using a traditional debit card, but with the added benefit of instant notifications and detailed tracking. Every time I made a payment, I received an immediate alert with the amount spent, the location of the transaction, and my updated balance. This real-time feedback made me far more aware of my spending and helped me build better financial habits. One of my favorite features was the automatic categorization of purchases. The app could tell whether I was buying groceries, ordering food, paying for transport, or subscribing to online services, and it sorted these transactions into labeled groups. Over time, this became a great way to understand where my money was going each month. I could even set budgets for different categories, and Revolut would notify me if I was getting close to reaching the limit I had set for, say, dining out or entertainment. Where Revolut really impressed me the most, though, was during travel. I took a two-week trip across several European countries and decided to rely almost entirely on Revolut for payments. Before the trip, I exchanged some currency in the app using the live interbank exchange rate, which was much more favorable than what traditional banks or airport kiosks offer. There were no hidden fees or unfair conversion rates—just a transparent, fair system. During the trip, I used the card to pay for meals, museum tickets, transport, and even souvenirs. Everything worked perfectly. In some cases, I didn’t even need to exchange money ahead of time because Revolut automatically converted my balance at the point of purchase, again using the best available rate. Withdrawing cash from ATMs also worked well, though it’s worth noting that there are some monthly limits, depending on which plan you’re using. On the free Standard plan, there’s a cap for free ATM withdrawals, and anything beyond that comes with a small fee. Still, it was convenient to have access to physical cash without much hassle. In every country I visited, the card was accepted almost everywhere, just like a local bank card would be. Revolut also offers a variety of extra tools like cryptocurrency trading, stock investing, and even the ability to buy precious metals like gold and silver. I experimented with these features a little bit, mostly out of curiosity. While I wouldn’t use Revolut as my main investment platform, it was a convenient way to dabble in different markets without needing to sign up for additional services. Everything is accessible within the same app, which keeps things simple and centralized. Reviewed on: 15th April 2025
