Insures where others refuse to apply common sense

5
I had huge trouble getting travel insurance due to a minor symptom undergoing protracted diagnosis, and was frankly amazed that all other insurers simply said I was uninsurable. With AllClear, my condition was simply excluded from cover, and after speaking to a helpful assistant on the phone, I learned this also expires after a time if it has not reoccurred or necessitated seeing a professional. I was frankly flabbergasted that no other insurer or broker seemed to be able to take this common sense approach, but I was pleased to purchase my cover with a top-rated insurer and at good value. I haven't had to claim but they're doing things right in my eyes! Reviewed on: 6th October 2024

Excellent app, fair fees, modern but a REAL bank

5
I've been using Starling as my main account for 5 years or so. I'm happy to be with a forward-looking bank whose service just works, every day of the week (no strange delays or transaction dates at weekends), but lets you pay in cheques (by photo) and cash (at the Post Office) for those occasional needs. I've had very little trouble though have contacted by in-app chat (and once by phone, when both my card and phone were stolen) and was happy with the service. App features such as Spaces and multiple accounts for contacts have been mainstays for years and other banks are only just starting to catch up to some of them. Together with entirely fee-free abroad usage (no limits) and in-credit interest recently bumped, I'm happy that Starling give a generous offering, great control of my finances, and everything I could expect from a traditional bank when I need it. Review of the By Miles, Car Insurance:

Car insurance, re-imagined. Good so far...

4
When I threw my details at one particular comparison website, By Miles came up right near the top. I'd never heard of them but did some research. Having recently started walking to work, my annual mileage has gone off a virtual cliff. Reading their approach on their website, what doesn't make sense about paying a premium for your car to be insured when parked, then paying as you drive? There's even the added demotivation of every mile costing you, but on my prediction, it works out well for me. Top marks for an innovative approach. I could also see By Miles have started from a blank sheet to built "not your average experience". From the way the website helps you get an approximate quote with very, very few questions to see if it's worth proceeding, to the fact your policy reference is not a string of numbers but three words, and the unusually familiar but clear language of the policy documents, I applaud their fresh approach. The app is fairly slick, and I've used the chat feature a couple of times to make some queries. Like with many web chat services, the non-real-time experience can mean it takes a while to get to the end, but I have found them responsive and helpful. Kudos for having protected no-claims bonus as standard -- no-one want to lose all that with one little incident. Having no familiarity with By Miles, the fact my policy is underwritten by a well-known insurer gave me confidence. In terms of recommendability, I can understand not everyone wanting the level of surveillance that comes with using a tracker, but I wanted to try that out, and it's worked well so far. It's a shame it ceases to be so cost-effective at higher mileages (which most people I know drive, which brings down the 'recommendability'), because it seems like a sensible way of doing insurance overall. Perhaps the product will develop. I wish them luck pushing change in the insurance world. Reviewed on: 11th September 2019
