Appalling customer service, communications and mortgage process

Barclays Mortgages seem to attract either 5* or 1* reviews; it’s down to luck as to whether your mortgage application goes through a competent or incompetent mortgage team. My application for a 18% LTV fixed rate mortgage should have taken just 5 days on a fast track route; 7 weeks later it is still sitting with the underwriter. Try as he might, my broker cannot get a coherent answer from Barclays as to the cause of the delay. One day he’ll be told it’s a technical issue, but the next person he deals with says it is not. My seller is so fed up with the lack of progress that he is threatening to remarket the property to someone who can proceed immediately Of note, Barclays is the only mainstream lender not to have a phone line to a responsible individual; all communication is by email or web chat, with the respondents being based in India. My experience so far, is of a lender with an incompetent team who simply don’t care. This is the second time in 6 years that I have attempted to get a Barclays mortgage, but the last time I will be let down in this way. I fully expect to lose the property we have been waiting 9 months to buy, solely due to Barclays’ incompetence and disinterest. My advice is not to be tempted by Barclays low interest rate, but instead, apply to the next best lender. Reviewed on: 21st March 2022
