Review of the Nationwide, Fixed Rate Mortgage:

Great bank, so no surprise the mortgages are good too

5
Been with Nationwide for accounts and savings and enjoyed it. See my bank account review for them. So when it came to getting a mortgage, it was likely to be Nationwide. They were actually the 3rd cheapest option for us, but we still went with them as we both had good experiences with them. The mortgage allows overpayments, a choice of how it's processed, and only takes £500 to trigger (much less than a previous mortgage I had). They also base the overpay limit on the original mortgage value, not the current; allowing you to pay more without hitting a penalty. Reviewed on: 7th September 2024

Unethical bank, if you can get past the login screen

1
Been with them on a few occasions and every time the same experience. They have the most complicated way to log into their accounts vs other banks. The names they give the codes, OTP, pins etc, vary throughout the process. So just logging in is a case of juggling 7+ different codes and passwords. No other bank seems to make it so hard to login apart from their child company FirstDirect. I had to repeatedly call them to unlock my accounts. Other than that, the bank account is average; nothing special, not even good savings rates like FD. And just like FD; the money isn't invested ethically. Reviewed on: 7th September 2024

Unethical bank, if you can get past the login screen

Been with them on two different occasions and both times same experience. They have the most complicated way to log into their accounts vs any other bank. The names they give the codes, OTP, pins etc, vary throughout the process. So just logging in is a case of juggling 7+ different codes and passwords. Apart from their parent bank, no other bank seems to make it so hard to login. I had to repeatedly call them to unlock my accounts. Other than that, the bank account is average; nothing special. The savings rates that are then accessible with them are usually good, but like their parent HSBC; the money isn't invested ethically. Reviewed on: 7th September 2024
Review of the Metro Bank, Current Account:

Great for basic accounts and highstreet branches

Been with Metro Bank on and off, honestly mostly as an account ready to switch. They don't offer anything beneficial compared to other banks. They do have a lot of branches, but I find it takes a long time to speak to someone; a branch visit is usually takes an hour end to end. And there are a fair few things you have to go into branch to open or resolve. They did recently have a good savings rate, but sadly that dropped soon after opening, and was eclipsed by other banks offerings. Reviewed on: 5th September 2024
Review of the Moneybox app, Savings Accounts:

Overall great app, but has some annoying quirks

3
Overall MoneyBox is a really good app, and has good rates on fixed products. I'm not an expert investor, but I did reasonably well on the investment side too based on their recommendations. But sadly you can't close their accounts. This means that you'll never get any new bonus rates. The interest earned doesn't scale when you make withdrawals, so it looks like you've made 200% on £0. I've asked customer support several times if there's any way to fix these issues, but it's a no. You have to fully leave all their accounts before they can delete you, and you can start with a clean slate. Though you account number is your NI number, so it's not clear if I will be able to rejoin. I don't know if that works with GDPR. I've never had a bank (or other service) where you can't close your account... Reviewed on: 4th September 2024
