Review of the Ulster Bank, Standard Current Account:

Available but not suited for Great Britain

3
Despite being the same bank as Natwest/RBS, their account opening forms were decades behind, very ugly and clunky. One with them the app and linked saving accounts were great. In time there was better options elsewhere so I decided to close my account. But I had opened the account from England. Natwest have limited powers over the account in branch. Over the phone I tried closing it, only to be told; could I go to Ireland to close the account... Eventually we closed the account via a handwritten letter to branch as advised by Natwest. Same as opening, it was clunky, but is a viable option for savers to get more than one reg saver. Reviewed on: 9th September 2024

A clunky not so ethical building society

4
Has some great products including low value fixed savings, and reg savers, plus the app is easy to use. One of my accounts matured, but getting the money out required logging into the desktop and setting up nominated bank account.. for each of the accounts I had; 4. Took more effort than needed, and meant I received 4 paper letters to confirm the changes. They're powered by Barclays which has terrible green credentials, ill fitting for the ethics of a building society. Reviewed on: 9th September 2024

Great app with great rates

5
Atom is app only, and years ago it wasn't great. Rejoining this year; things have improvement massively. The app is more snappy and easy to navigate, and the accounts you can open in it have great rates. They also make it easy to have multiple fixed accounts, and offer short term accounts too; which is nice if you're saving with a date in mind. Reviewed on: 9th September 2024

The best bank in the UK for all their products

5
Category was for FlexDirect, but this applies to all their accounts and savings. I've been with them for a fair few years now, and never had an issue. The app always works, the agents are UK based and quick to reach on the phone, and the few times you need to go into branch; there's many on the highstreet and helpful within. They're also ethical and reward their members, recently giving a switching incentive even for existing members. The app allows you to search transactions by cost or name which is very helpful. Great bank, so no surprise the mortgages are good too

5
Been with Nationwide for accounts and savings and enjoyed it. See my bank account review for them. So when it came to getting a mortgage, it was likely to be Nationwide. They were actually the 3rd cheapest option for us, but we still went with them as we both had good experiences with them. The mortgage allows overpayments, a choice of how it's processed, and only takes £500 to trigger (much less than a previous mortgage I had). They also base the overpay limit on the original mortgage value, not the current; allowing you to pay more without hitting a penalty. Reviewed on: 7th September 2024
