Review of the Barclays, Current Account:

Terrible call centres, poor product selling points

1
Was with Barclays for 15 years from a child to my first job. As an adult, I realised there was no benefit to being with them. Later when I had to have a mortgage with them, I opened a bank account. Their systems couldn't handle me having both a mortgage and a bank account with them, so my mortgage disappeared and couldn't be interacted with. Calling them was a nightmare, hard to get through, difficult to understand the agents, and they couldn't fix the problem. In store they worked directly with Barlcays IT department, but still couldn't fix the issue. In the end they set me up with a completely new profile. After a few years the new account wasn't giving me any benefits, so I closed the account... this then wiped my mortgage from the account again! I told them directly to set me up with a new profile as that had worked in the pass, so at least this time around the issue was fixed quicker. In general, they're also he worse bank for ethics and fossil fuels, so even as a basic single bank account, there's still issues. They are the only bank I will actively warn people to avoid. They nearly cost me my flat, and moving out of home

1
Sadly my first home was above shops, so limited me in choices of companies. Barclays was the cheapest of the two options. Whilst arranging a mortgage, the whole home purchase process ground to a halt. Barclays were not progressing the mortgage application. It took me, the estate agents, several friends, both sides solicitors, the developer and my mortgage advisor calling them non-stop for 4 days, to eventually get through to someone. Barclays had asked for my flats Royal Mail address, and the address including floor number (which we don't use in the UK). These didn't match and they silently stopped progressing my mortgage as these two different addresses, that they asked for, didn't match. I was incredibly stressed and depressed that my chance to move out of home was on the line, as there wasn't much time left to exchange. Later after thankfully moving in, I opened a bank account with them, but this hid my mortgage account and I couldn't pay my mortgage. They had to wipe my profile and rebuild everything. And when I later closed the account a few years later, my mortgage disappeared again... Finally part redemption mortgage overpayments with them require a separate payment of 3x your mortgage cost. This made overpaying them a slow process. I have never been so angered and upset by any other company. Reviewed on: 4th September 2024

Algbra had some great ideas that have since passed

3
Algbra is an ethical bank with a great modern current account. However the main selling point of 1.5% cashback was removed after they said previously it would be extended. It wasn't clear what was eligible for cashback, or what transactions the cashback you got was from. It also had a high rate of contactless failures. With other ethical banks offering more, it's hard to see a purpose to my account. But I hope they will improve in future. Reviewed on: 4th September 2024

A great credit union with unique products

5
Credit unions don't offer interest, so this was my first time with one. They had really good rates, and I loved the fact the account was 6 months length which is more malleable as life changes. Reviewed on: 17th May 2024

New type of savings account

5
Their current is a new type of savings account where you earn interest up to the point you spent it. It's instantly available for transfers or card payments. The app is easy to use and was easy to sign up. Would be nice if the rate was a little higher, but it's still more than most other current accounts. Reviewed on: 15th March 2024
