A waste of time for small businesses

I needed business insurance for my company. The online form gave me a Public and Product Liability quote. I also needed Money Protection and Contents cover, so I called Hiscox. The call took 30 minutes to pass the new details to the underwriters. Afterwards, Hiscox emailed me a new quote with all three covers. The email said my quote was "ready to go" and told me to click "Buy now". I clicked it and got an error page saying "We've slipped up! Sorry, we experienced some technical issues." I called again and waited on hold. They then told me the quote was not ready after all and was still with the underwriters. So Hiscox sent me an email telling me to buy a policy that I could not buy. Their website failed, and I had to spend more time on hold to learn something they should have told me in the first place. Business owners don't have time for this. If a quote is still with the underwriters, don't send an email saying it's ready. Fix the link between your systems and your emails, or tell customers clearly where their quote stands. Two long phone calls and still no policy is not acceptable. I left your quote reference (PSC1-4045623) out of the review. If you post it on Trustpilot, Hiscox can use the reference to find your case and reply. Reviewed on: 17th September 2026

Overall winner

Insurance premiums vary wildly. Often some look cheap to start with but then you realise you have to add this and that on so the premium ends up being considerably more than your initial expectations. It’s the Ryanair model. We’ve insured with Hiscox for donkeys years because they always come out on top, taking everything into account: excellent claims handling, no quibbling, and a very fair premium for what you get. I love getting the best price and have shopped around to see if I can better Hiscox. I could not. Reviewed on: 8th August 2023

Top level cover for an SME at a great price

Hiscox is one of the best insurers out there and the cover is wide, but the price was the best quote I got. Reviewed on: 26th June 2018

It pays to negotiate

After going through a broker for our business insurance the Hiscox quote started at about £1900/year. After querying this a bit it came down to <£1200...so it really did pay to question it a little! Reviewed on: 11th August 2015
