After 21 years as a Domestic & General customer, I made my first claim for a faulty water pump at a tenanted property. The engineer said the repair was not covered because the system needed a power flush. The boiler is serviced every year, and I dispute that a power flush was necessary as on an old system this can do more harm than good. The engineer left without calling me, leaving a family with children stranded without heating or hot water. I complained and was told the matter would be escalated quickly, but I heard nothing. When I called back, I was passed around and could not speak to the complaints department. I have paid more than £15,000 in premiums over 21 years. As a chartered building surveyor with 40 years’ experience, I found both the decision and the way this claim was handled deeply disappointing. When they came and looked at it, I had to go a find him in our car park because he couldn't find the house (everyone else manages it) and he then talked down to me for five minutes before deciding the freezer was irreparable. They offered my three alternative replacements which were completely unsuitable because they'd listed the wrong current device. They also claimed the policy I had yet to be given a number for had expired!! and I had to take out another one to get a replacement. Sent an email to their CE and they are now abusing the Data Protection Act requirements to delay doing anything. Now reported to the Financial Conduct Authority and the Data Protection Commissioner. On the 12th September I called D&G in relation to my very old washing machine which had broken down again. Hotpoint ‘engineer’ (I say that loosely) turned up with no parts and had to come back a week later. Turned up today and the parts don’t work. He stated to me he’d tried everything and that I’d need a replacement. Happily choosing my new washing machine only to receive an email saying they’re coming again IN ANOTHER WEEK with all the parts that are needed and no mention of my new machine. It will have been 2 1/2 weeks without a washing machine for a household of 6 with a vulnerable elderly female whose sheets are changed daily. I am beyond livid.
