As banks go, not too bad - unless you get badly overdrawn

I have been with Santander for many years and have two basic current accounts - one i use for personal, the other for business. The online experience is really good - especially on iPad but also on Android as well as desktops - transferring between accounts is easy and paying bills is easy - the biggest gripe is the flawed 'pending payments' option - this only works with direct debits - anything else that's a regular payment doesn't show up - even though I suspect that the bank still must know in advance that a payment is coming out. If you go accidentally overdrawn, they say they can refund charges as a 'goodwill gesture' about once a year - I know this isn't actually set in stone as I know someone that works at the bank - my branch - it's just something phone operators are told to say. So unless you argue and complain, you can still effectively be charged about £20 for going overdrawn by a fiver. Reviewed on: 18th August 2015

They blocked my account for lack of documents that they didn't ask for in the first place. Took my 4 trips to the branch, more than 10 calls to customer support across more than 20 days to get it resolved. Once this was solved, any sizeable transfer to another account in my name will block my account again, so spend more time on the phone with customer support to unlock it. They're absolutely incompetent, no idea what they're doing. I'm leaving them as soon as I can. Reviewed on: 3rd April 2023

Abysmal Customer Service and Aggressive Staff

Unbelievably poor and rude customer service! I have banked with them for over 15 years, went into the Southampton branch today only to be spoken down to, shouted on and pushed by a supposed supervisor at the Above Bar branch. I went in with identification and a simple request to change information on my account but a rude woman interrupted my conversation with a staff member, refusing my request, arguing with me about it, raising her voice then barging past me when I refused to speak to her about it any further. She then proceeded to go to the back and audibly complain about me to a colleague while I was standing there. Extremely unprofessional behaviour and unnecessary aggression, I would never expect this behaviour from any staff there. I am closing my account and would strongly recommend anyone not to bank with them. They do not value their customers and worse still, would not pick the phone several times when I tried to submit a complaint. Reviewed on: 11th March 2023

Long story short - the wife and I applied successfully for everyday current account to avail £200 switch offer. Forget about switch offer, instead, accounts closed after a few days. A lousy letter, with no explanation given. Customer service won't give any reason for closure either. Crooks. Reviewed on: 28th February 2023
