Review of the BUPA, Health Insurance:

OK, but be careful of exclusions

3
I have Bupa health insurance through work, and they are OK, but be very careful about the exclusions, I've found several things I would fully expect to be covered are not because of many complicated exclusions. Also when you do request treatment you're left to find a doctor/consultant from their long list yourself, this is virtually impossible when you don't understand complex medical terms to know which doctor has the specialism you need (it took me several weeks to get an appointment lined up as I was passed around many places because of this) Reviewed on: 3rd September 2023

Terrible do not use

1
The documentation hoops you need to… The documentation hoops you need to jumpt through are a NIGHTMARE. In Short, you require the NHS GP to fill out a pretreatment form EVERYTIME you want access to treatment and typically costs 40£!!. Which means you speed of treatment is bottlednecked by the overwhelmed(underfunded) NHS GP service and cost an additional 40£ each time. This process was not made clear to me when i bought the policy. Try Another provider!!! Further update, I asked to change my policy but they say I have to cancel and resubmit a new one. Which means NO TREATMENT for issues the started all of this in the first place. Reviewed on: 14th February 2024

My policy covers me for the treatment i'm claiming for but still they won't pay, how are they allowed to get away with this its criminal. Reviewed on: 25th November 2023

no point holding this insurance because doctors in uk are no longer treating bupa patients

1
i was told by my doctor that he probably would not be able to do my operation because bupa have not increased the fees they pay to their doctors for 30 years approximately. Most anaesthetists are already refusing BUPA patients for this reason and I certainly don't fancy having my operation without anaesthetic! BUPA's fee system locks in the most junior surgeons to low fees so if you see a BUPA doctor, he/she most likely is somebody at the start of their consultant career rather than a seasoned expert so this makes thier insurance policy even less worthwhile and I think I might be better off with the NHS! No Support For Mental Health

1
I have been a member for over 30 years and have found the utter decline has been beyond belief. I believe that BUPA is now the worst company in the sector by a mile. They are a disgrace and take peoples money for years under the false illusion that you can beat NHS queues which certainly now is not the case. My son was recently advised to see a psychiatrist and to my absolute amazement we could not get one through BUPA unless we where willing to travel, six hours to Scotland . They agreed that they could not help and offered me £100.00 which I don’t want. It’s not about the money , I just wanted help for my son which they could not offer because they are so far behind the times when it comes to dealing with mental health. Apparently they are not willing to offer psychiatrists the going rate so consequently can’t get anyone. I am taking this to the financial ombudsman and would love to hear from anyone who has had similar issues when it comes to mental health. This company cannot carry on taking peoples money under the false pretences that they are there to help when needed when in reality they don’t have the infrastructure. Bupa charged me for Pregnancy I am 69 years old

1
Bupa charged me - now 69 years old - for pregnancy and birth, weight loss surgery, etc Bupa has been charging me for five services that I do not need, or that I do not want, such as Pregnancy and Birth, and Weight Loss surgery. When seeking advice from Bupa on the 23rd December 2021 on the phone, I specifically asked for all unneeded or unwanted Extras and to be deleted. At no time during that conversation did the Bupa representative mention that there is another category called "Services" that includes 5 services that I do not need or do not want, such as Pregnancy and Birth. I recently learnt that as there is no fixed 'Contract', Bupa can legally do this. The onus is on me to read the fine print in the policy. However, I believe it is highly unethical of Bupa to charge a 69 year old for 5 "Services" that are not needed and/or not wanted. The Bupa representative should have told me in my phone consultation because the representative knew that I was seeking to lower the cost of the premium. Reviewed on: 8th September 2023
