Review of the RAC, Breakdown Cover:

Garbage and not safe for women

1
Called 4.40pm, alone in car park, electrical faults, told RAC would be there at 8pm. Had to move car as car park was closing and area was dark. Was told it was not safe to move car but then told by other operator it was my decision. Drove car with rattling engine to main road with hazards. Told it would be around 10pm. No escalation about female on own, in dark. Drove 5 mph home. Told RAC would be here by 1.50am. Escalation team rang said now I was home safe, no guarantee of time as other people may be vulnerable. What a ridiculous service. Spike to 9 people all saying something different. Wish I had never left the AA. Now told it will be tomorrow BUT no guarantee anyone would turn up. Not even a RAC car service.

1
Booked a service on the RAC website. The service I received was very poor with items checked poorly. Other items not checked at all. When I complained to the RAC they stated they subcontract the servicing to Who Can Fix My Car! They claim the servicing was 100% correct. The RAC were very unhelpful (they do after all have my money) How can this be legal? Could not recommend. Reviewed on: 10th September 2023

Disgraceful

1
Left for 10hrs in a carpark 70miles from home, with my terminally ill partner. Continuously misled about times assistance was coming .Left on hold for 49 minutes, avoid the RAC pay the extra and go to the AA Reviewed on: 9th September 2023

Terrible even the complaints department don't read the whole complaint.

I had a puncture on my m/cycle called the Rac who did send a rescue vehicle in a reasonable time. Unfortunately the puncture could not be repaired. He called for recovery & stayed until the message came through saying recovery was being arranged. 1hr later no news. Phoned again it appeared nothing had been done. Then incoming message saying your then incoming message saying your repairer has reported that you need recovery. Half an hour later still no news. Call again ask for the person on the phone. Do you know anyone that’s got a van funniy eh. Half an hour later still no news. Call again ask for the person on the phone. Do you know anyone that’s got a van funniy one. he then went on to tell me that there was no one in the area with the capabilities of recovering the motorcycle but will try and keep me informed. after 5 1/2 hours I’ve been standing in the roadside in mainly rain. Fortunately a kind soul came to my rescue and went and got his work van and let me put my bike in his garage until I can get it fixed myself, I didn’t cancel the RAC recovery and set about the complaints procedure which appears I can’t even do that properly. The person who dealt with the claim only read the first bit about the rescue vehicle and said in his opinion it was all okay. Exit arrived within the to 2 hours, it was allotted singers actually on the roadside for nearly 6 hours , I think this is very poor. I paid for national recovery top quality service and received a Porsche serviced. You could ever wish to get whatever you do do not join the RAC Reviewed on: 5th September 2023

What customer service

1
Car broke down 16/08 and through our insurance the breakdown cover is with RAC. They arranged a collection of the vehicle on 17/08 but it failed because the person at the other end didn’t set it up correctly so we waited most of the day only for no one to arrive. We phoned and was advised someone forgot to activate this collected and that they would send another one - this was a third party tow company because of how late it was. They damaged our car putting the tow straps on. The customer service seems to be non existent and they advise an 8 week wait time for complaints to be responded to. My complaint still hasn’t been responded to even though I have tried calling to actually speak to someone I just get told I have to wait. What a joke, I would never consider using the RAC not if this is the ‘customer service’ they are offering. It seems impossible for anyone to actually helps us! Reviewed on: 5th September 2023

Reliable response

Proven results when requested. The rescue staff are always courteous and professional. Response within expecting time. Explanation of repairs carried out. Reviewed on: 24th August 2023

12 hours waiting

12 hours waiting with 2 children one of them 2 years and half other one 5 years old. Just to let you know you are waisting your money to go with RAC Reviewed on: 24th August 2023

Stranded for 13 hours

1
When I took out recovery with RAC, I did so on the understating that recovery was typically 45-60 minute. Travelling 5 hours up north for our annual holiday to Ayr, our car experienced a rear tyre blow out on the A1(M) we managed to pull onto the hard shoulder & contact yourself for recovery, 10.49 am. So now stuck at the side of the A1(M) with 3 children & a disabled husband, recovery time slots kept changing. Been waiting that long with the hazards on, it drained the car battery. 10.49am I reported the breakdown 16.53pm the recovery truck turned, finally this nightmare is over... Nope were then informed were being recovered to services & then we need to wait again for RAC recovery. It then took recovery truck & my husband over 1 hour to get the car on the truck, as steering was locked, battery dead & no means to jump or power the battery. 18.10 & were moving, we arrived at the service station at 19.08, still 31 mile from home. Rang RAC again 19.29 was given an allocated time of 20.24. Which then switched to 10.14pm - 1.14am. Our first day of our holiday completely gone all because what should have took around 60 minutes in actual fact took over 13 hours and we still wasn't recovered. 00.15 I seeked my own recovery. I am absolutely disgusted that you are miss selling the cover time & leaving (in your words) "high priority" people in a very dangerous location for 7 hours. Over 13 hours I've waited to be recovered with 3 children & my disabled husband! Complaint submitted. Reviewed on: 11th August 2023

I would not recommend RAC at ALL

1
I would not recommend RAC at ALL! I have been waiting 10ths through the night with a disability. I’ve called 10 x all the staff saying the call out is being pushed back to 2-5hrs further. Promises of managers calling but have not. I have no water or food so a cab came and the cab man said it’s common for this duration of time. RAC have been unless, to be a woman on my own on the A3 for 10ths is horrific. I’m trying another breakdown company. DO NOT RECOMMEND. Reviewed on: 30th July 2023

Left to burn on a Spanish roadside

1
Spanish roadside for 9 Hours and still counting I am currently sitting on the side of the road in Spain broken down and have been here for nine hours already. RAC refuses to help me as they say it's the responsibility of their European partners to cover Europe and so far i have made 13 calls to opteven ( said European partner) and still haven't been recovered. I would not recommend anyone getting European cover from RAC as I have found the whole experience extremely tiring as a recovering renal cancer patient and frustrating. I took out the premier cover with Saga RAC breakdown for the express reason of taking the stress away from a breakdown and have been completely let down. I was told however that it's beautiful scenery in Spain by the French call handler but it's hard to enjoy baking in the sun covered in a layer of dust from a nearby building site. If you want minimum hassle then shop elsewhere. Date of experience: July 28, 2023 Reviewed on: 28th July 2023
