Decent account for students. Decent account for students. It doesn’t offer additional “freebies” but the option of having interest free overdraft can be very helpful Reviewed on: 19th March 2024

Good but room for improvement

My entire family banks with Barclays, so when I needed a bank account it was a no brainer. As I had just started university, barclays offered me the student additions account, this is an account for undergraduate students with comes with an overdraft of upto £2000. For students who want to access the maximum amount swiftly and easily, this may not suit you. You start with a £200 overdraft initially, any increase in this amount, or any increase thereafter requires you to go through an extensive form with a barclays associate examining your finances, asking questions about your spending habits and occasionally recent transactions. This allows for sensible spending, the idea that money is only accessible after you review your spending habits is a good idea but sometimes the process can appear to be very drawn out and a little patronising. Unlike other student accounts, Barclays as far as I'm aware in the five years I have banked with them, have never had a student offer for the account, unlike other banks which have offered various incentives. Good service with nice benefits

Easy to acces in many ways such as online and mobile. In addition, concerned about security, requiring the use of an authentication code and free antivirus software. No issues yet two years later. Reviewed on: 24th December 2015

Great package of perks

My account has a clever graduated overdraft amount, and a number of other benefits such as cashback, and the ability to create a personalised card which makes it feel a bit more like mine. Good mobile app too helps to make dealing with Barclays pretty easy! Reviewed on: 19th October 2015

Cracking app

I do almost all my banking using the Barclays app as it makes like simple! Highly recommend this for other students. Reviewed on: 3rd September 2015

A fine account, but not much leeway when helping out students with overdrafts

All other student accounts I've had have been fab for allowing a healthy overdraft to help me get through tough times while studying. Most students don't have the extra money lying around for things like housing deposits so a student overdraft is a must for many. The Barclays student account seems great and they offer lots of interesting little extras like personalised debit cards and insurance packs. But when it comes down to the overdraft they are just difficult to deal with. I requested one and was told no, because I had bounced a payment a few months prior. I know there is fair lending in place but it still seemed unfair! I ended up begging them and explaining I needed the cash for a house deposit and they finally allowed me to have it. I've since gone on to purchase other Barclays products and will likely stay with the bank for a long time but I'm still pretty miffed they treated me like I was stupid or overly spendy when I really needed it most. Not a good way to treat customers who could become long-term future customers with mortgages, well paying jobs, et cetera. Reviewed on: 10th August 2015

5* app

I do almost all my banking via this app - it's by far the best I've seen and very reliable. Reviewed on: 20th July 2015

Mobile app is top

My review is really about the top class Barclays app. It works, is slick and really easy to use. Reviewed on: 6th July 2015

Good account, but more perks would be nice!

This is a good student account, with many great features. However, as a student account it would be better if it had money tips/vouchers/deals to help with student life. Reviewed on: 1st June 2015

My experince was wonderful and simple.

Well Before i hjoined barclays I was struggling to handle my accounts well. Until one day i saw an advert on the tv. So i went to my nearest barclays store and decided to transfer my account. However i was told i couldnt. But even though i couldnt they talked and explained with me about what i had needed to to do. Once i sat down ajnd they explained i thought it was too compelx and deiced to remove all the money from my current account and make a neew account with barlays. Now this is the best decision i think i have ever made in my life. It has truly changed and made my life better and i really just want to say a big thank you to barclays for everythign they have ever done with me. Reviewed on: 22nd April 2015
