Review of the Green Flag, Breakdown Insurance:

Avoid if you travel across counties

1
Green Flag review from this weekend. Absolute nightmare. Copied from my trust pilot review please share! We broke down at 12am having set off from Scotland at 7pm. We had 3 hours left of our journey home. As a family with 2 dogs and a poorly child, we broke down with a caravan in tow - the turbo went on the car so unable to solve roadside therefore recovery needed. Initial call was hopeful - green flag stated it would be 45 mins until they had someone to us as we were a priority having a child and animals on board and as we were on a busy motorway just south of Scotland. 2.5 hours later we have our FIRST OF THREE recovery trucks arrive. He advised Lincoln was not in his area so would take us 1,5 hours to Lymm services where we would be met by the next recovery vehicle " great , that's ok " we thought .... Oh how wrong we were!! Telephone call from green flag advising us that at our ETA at Lymm services we would have a recovery man waiting for us within 30 mins of arrival (6:30/7am) Green flag advised the next part of our recovery would be completed by Eggertons from Lymm services. Upon being dropped off by the first recovery truck , we sat in the lorry park of Eggertons at Lymm services. Saw a truck with a guy sat in it and by 8am contacted Sarah who advised that they were running behind ( 1.5 hours!) and had someone on route to us. We asked if the chap in the lorry park was our driver which she denied. Roll on 10Aam ( 15 hours into the journey) , the same guy sat looking at us at Eggertons lorry park, reverses his truck to our car stating he hadn't received the job and could only take us to the next service station 27 mins away!!! Fuming is an understatement - my little boy was sobbing by this point as he felt so unwell - we are both tired out and stressed and totally flabbergasted at the lack of common sense displayed by green flag , never the less after a rather cross phone call to green flag I am absolutely assured that the next truck will absolutely be with us by 11:10. you guessed it - 12:15 the next one rolled up - thank fully ready equipped to take us all the way home. In short our experience has been a nightmare! Why not put us into a services over night to then recover us the next day in one hit! Utterly outrageous with no courtesy shown for us or the animals left stranded in service stations and roadside for over 11 hours!!! Sort yourselves out green flag - this is totally unacceptable! Disorganised, disjointed, poor communication and utterly dismal dishonest service- don't advertise "national recovery" with the caravan and motorhome clubs if you are blatantly unable to achieve a service to meet the needs of your customers!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. I was Left for 6 hours at the side of the road with a disabled member of staff. Repeatedly given false information. Lost £14000 worth of work and had to cover £250 per day of staff wages for the four days that had to be cancelled because I wasn’t recovered. First person arrived after4 hours with no tools, took photos of the car and then left. Made no attempt to identify the problem. They contacted me 2 days later and offered me £50 compensation. That made me even angrier. Reviewed on: 2nd February 2024

Dog not allows in recovery vehicle

1
Friends broke down returning from a short break holiday in Somerset. IThey were informed that their small dog was not allowed to travel in vehicle as this was against company policy. They had to arrange for an alternative breakdown service to get them home. Please be aware of this policy if you have cover with this company and intend travelling with a pet. EU breakdown cover

1
“I purchased European breakdown cover as I planned to visit different areas in EU for some business trip and pleasure. Whilst visiting south France on a short trip my car broke down on the toll road on 23rd August. It was a self diagnosed blown turbo on a BMW so little chance of having a roadside repair. The police organised recovery from toll rd to a safe garage which was great service but the rest was a total nightmare. Green flag U.K. contract out to a EU company called Opteven so you have to deal directly with them for assistance. When calling the average on hold time before answer was 40 minutes, then the assistance on the phone was vague. We were instructed to book a hotel to stay in overnight until they update us, suggesting they need to diagnose the fault. I explained my vehicle was in the middle of France miles away from Any BMW specialist so diagnosis on a major engine fault may be a challenge especially as my vehicle was dropped off at a Renault garage. So one hotel night later and after no response from optevan I called and waited again. Once I got through I said I will organise a hire car and make our way back to Calais and I would like my car repatriated back to U.K. to be diagnosed and repaired there as I had no idea how many days or weeks we would have to wait for a repair to be done in France. They agreed and after some hassle Optevan hired us a car and I covered the 150 Euro taxi to get the the hire company. I then asked if Optevan could hire a car for me from Dover so we can get back to our home address in the U.K. and they said they would work on that for us. So after me booking a hotel and again covering the cost plus paying extra for the ferry trip home, I also has to hire the car at Dover as I heard nothing from Optevan or GreenFlag U.K. I then try and claim Back the money paid and I am informed that I need to fill out forms and send to Direct lime, now dealing with three separate companies. After all this Amd many phone calls later to chase up when my vehicle will return to the U.K. so I can get it repaired it fixed ally arrived at the garage on the 11th October. Yes that’s correct, 50 days later from the day of our break down in France. Optevan seemed to think this timescale was fine. So I had to hire a car for 49 days in U.K. and GreenFlag would only cover 1 day cost to get back to my U.K. address. So although GreenFlag have a good name and I believe give great service for U.K. breakdowns, from my experience I highly recommend never ever using them for EU breakdown cover unless you have a large bank account. Pay more and get better cover with a company that cares.” Reviewed on: 12th October 2022

Expensive

Costs a lot for them to actually do nothing much at all. Once broke down in a remote area and all they did was call a local tyre repair shop I could have contacted myself. I still got charged for the rescue and tyre replacement so I don't know what my premium covered. They're also weirdly strict about recovery at or near home. Reviewed on: 15th August 2022

Utterly useless

6 hours roadside today waiting for a recovery truck than never arrived a taxi they said they booked but hadn't, and a hire car 15 miles away which no one knew was available or not, 6 hours in 33 degrees with children on board do yourself a favour and go elsewhere, 140 miles home ended up taking 11 hours.
