Health insurance is not what you think

I have health insurance for both my Wife and I. Hearing bad stories and delays in NHS health care I felt peace of mind thinking if we were ill we would have the best care immediately. We were in the 2nd year of Saga Bupa cover so when I had issues with my oesophagus I had to pay for my NHS doctor to fill in a moratorium form to say he hadn't seen me for this issue as it would invalidate my claim. Causing some delay in my 1st consultation with a gastroenterologist. I then had to wait 5 weeks for an endoscopy. NHS waiting time is 2 weeks and with Saga Bupa it took 8 weeks. Then after my diagnosis of eosinophilic oesophagitis the treatment was a 6 week course of steroid, the insurance doesn't cover this so its going to cost me another £440 on top of the £250 excess and £40 doctors fee. I will end up paying more for this diagnosis and treatment than Saga Bupa. I have found my experience with Saga Bupa very impersonal, its just like having car insurance. The policy exclusions are a nightmare to understand and are peppered with get out clauses. I was sold this policy on the basis I would get better care more quickly than NHS and I would have access to better drugs. Simply not the case, I will be taking this to the Financial Ombudsman as I feel this policy was mis-sold. Reviewed on: 9th May 2025

Saga changed its insurance provider from AXA to BUPA...

Saga changed its insurance provider from AXA to BUPA last year. The service is not as good. The authorisation process is slower, the staff are less empathetic, even in the specialist care extensions, and I feel that the new provider is more inclined to an attitude of how can we deny the claim, and less how can we help you. The care is still there but it’s harder to access, and a much less positive experience. Reviewed on: 21st March 2025

Very disappointed by the cancellation charge.

Saga health insurance was excellent except on renewal my subscription had increased considerably. During the membership year I discovered another company offering me the same cover for half the price! On cancelling my policy I was unexpectedly charged £93.70 despite not making a claim in that membership year.. This left a bad feeling and I’m disappointed as I had no prior knowledge of a cancellation fee. Prior to this experience Saga were faultless. Reviewed on: 7th December 2024

Claim Not Met in Full

I have a Saga health insurance policy, underwritten by AXA PPP, which includes a payment benefit of £150 for every night in an NHS hospital. I recently had a minor heart attack and spent two nights in an NHS hospital. Despite arriving in A&E at midday on the first day, very depressingly the whole of first night was in a chair/on a trolley in A&E as the hospital had absolutely no beds. The hospital finally found me a bed at 11.30am on the second day! In all, I was 23 hours in A&E. Very unreasonably, Saga have refused my claim for the £150 for the first night I spent on a trolley as they claim I had not been formally admitted!! The Saga/Axa customer services agent was very dismissive of my claim for the first night and I have now raised a formal complaint. I very much hope that Saga show some basic common sense and meet the claim in full. Reviewed on: 29th December 2022

Possibly the worst decision I have ever made

It look very good on paper, and a strong brand etc, however the reality is very different. Communicating with them is nigh on impossible and when you have any issues they simply blame AXA and walk away.There is no customer service, focus or care, stay well clear. Reviewed on: 11th April 2022
