Review of the Santander, 123 Current Account (discontinued):

Nearly lost me a home

First they increased the monthly fee from £2 to £5...then they cut the interest rate from 3% to 1.5%...well ok that's market forces at work, I guess I understand...but what really got my goat? When we moved house earlier this year, I needed to transfer a lump sum for a rental deposit...Santander blocked it because it "didn't fit my regular spending pattern". Well of course not, moving house is not a regular occurrence! There was easily enough money in the account to cover it, but despite having received certified proof that I'm a grown up when I opened the account Santander seem to think they have the right to stop me spending my own money! When I asked what I could have done to prevent this, they said "nothing, as it's automated" - how comforting! I got £30 compensation, but that's nowhere near enough for the stress of nearly losing the home we wanted (&needed) and the embarrassment of the letting agents and landlord treating me like a wanted criminal. Good - but used to be better

The best thing about Santander 123 is that I get interest on my balance. There's also cashback on some items. It all add up but must be offset against the monthly fee. At the moment this is working form me but it's a close thing. Careful management needed. Reviewed on: 11th April 2023

Cashback value

had this account for some years and has enabled us to stretch funds, due to the value of the cash back received. Reviewed on: 10th April 2023

extra pocket money

each month you earn some Cashback on Direct Debit payments 1/2/3% and some interest 2% on balances up to £20.000 on your credit balance for only £4 monthly fee ( pay at least £500 into your account each month and have at least 2 active Direct Debits) - always added monthly... Easy to use current account until you need to transfer a large amount

Current account is easy to use on website and the app. Only bugbear is the payment size limit and occasional disabling of account access which involves a long wait on the phone to re-enable Reviewed on: 7th April 2023

Great service - but at a distance

I really like the 123 account for the ease of online management and for the good interest rates. My only criticism of Santander as a bank is the lack of branches on the High Street. There is nowhere i can visit to speak to someone face to face. When you need support (for example following a recent bereavement) it is very difficult to manage at a distance.
