Review of the Halifax, Clarity Credit Card:

Good for spending abroad, bad for paying off early

This is a great credit card for spending while abroad at a really good rate. I was a big fan but then they changed the system for paying off the debt early (it would no longer reduce the direct debit charge, and I kept ending up in credit) and if you wanted to stop paying twice you had to cancel and restart the direct debit each time which is just a massive hassle. This wouldn't be such a problem if it weren't for the fact that ATM withdrawals start charging interest straight away, insentivising you to pay that debt back as soon as possible. Too unreliable

Several years ago we got this for use abroad and it has been more trouble than it’s worth. Even if we pre advise of a trip (which they say we don’t need to do) any payment is invariably blocked. Twice they’ve assumed fraud and cancelled the card (and will only send a replacement to your home address within a week) so we couldn’t use it again for the rest of the trip. We end up using our UK card which costs far more than using a card that is less competitive than Clarity but does actually work when abroad. So now we just take lots of cash (at online rates) and whatever is left is then a bonus when we go away next time! Reviewed on: 12th January 2020

Great for overseas spending

No charges or fees for overseas so I have this specifically for using abroad. Interest rates aren't great but a good tool to have for holidays. Reviewed on: 29th December 2019

Blocked card day 1 of my holiday abroad

Day 1 of my holiday they blocked my card. I called them and their automatic system of entering my DOB was telling me my DOB was incorrect (it wasn't) I was then asked some ridiculous security questions such as what year did I open the account (i wasnt 100% of the year as I've had for around 3 or 4 years, so i 'failed' the security questions despite knowing all the normal questions... and then they promptly blocked my card and said i could only get this unlocked my going into a branch in england. Well I couldn't possibly do that as I was in USA for the next 3 weeks and now with no credit card! I had set up the voice recognition and told them I knew all of the normal security questions and pleaded with them to go through the security process again but they couldn't care less and left me stranded abroad without my card. I closed the account down there and then. They knew it was me as they let me shut the account down funnily enough! Ridiculous!! Do NOT rely on this card abroad as I've had numerous nightmares with it since they stopped asking you to tell them when you're going abroad. I'm submitting a complaint. Unreliable and ridiculous. Easy to bank with

I would recommend Halifax as it is very easy to manage my money with them, the clarity credit card in particular is very useful and there are no fees for using it abroad. Reviewed on: 8th December 2019

Perfect Holiday Card

I've used this card for all my holiday spending for years. You get a superior exchange rate than you do buying currency to go abroad. There are no fees to pay per transaction like a lot of cards have. Reviewed on: 27th November 2019
