Don’t bother use someone else’s credit card abroad

1
We got a Clarity credit card to use abroad as there are no transaction fees on foreign purchases. You know why? Because the fraud department puts a block on the card if you try to use it abroad, pretending that ‘fraudulent activity has been detected’ In that you’ve attempted to buy something. It worked fine for a day and a half. Then the next three transactions were stopped. I managed to buy a coffee this morning but it wouldn’t let me buy my lunch! You try the (un)help(ful) 24/7 messaging service and they don’t answer. They did the next day to tell me to ring a UK number. I’m in the US, for God’s sake, and they want me to phone, at vast expense, then hang on listening to rubbish music until they can deign to answer me… and we all know that they’ll be ‘experiencing higher call volumes than normal’ don’t we? All that to tell them my date of birth, postcode and the last three transactions on the account!! And then they might consider letting me use the thing for a day or so before blocking it again. They’re hopeless. Get a Nationwide or Coop card instead, there’s never been any problem with them. There are, I presume, other cards that have a zero fee foreign transaction thingie as well. DON’T GET A HALIFAX CLARITY CARD! Reviewed on: 8th March 2025
