Scammed for £43,821 Refused to Apply APP Protections

Scammed for £43,821 – Bank Refused to Apply APP Protections I was the victim of a sophisticated bank impersonation scam and lost £43,821.59. Despite clear evidence of fraud — including real-time knowledge of my transactions and recovery of £22,441 by a receiving bank — Allica Bank refused reimbursement. They classified the as “account takeover” rather than an authorised push payment (APP) scam, avoiding application of the October 2024 APP reimbursement rules. Customers are expected to hold significant balances, yet in my case there was no effective intervention when large, unusual payments were made under clear deception. In your own communication, you described this as a “sophisticated impersonation scam”, which clearly involves deception and social engineering. Despite this, you chose to classify the as “account takeover” and declined to apply the October 2024 APP reimbursement protections. This contradiction is significant. Crucially, the fraudsters demonstrated real-time knowledge of my transactions during the call. They referenced activity that had just occurred, which would not be possible without either highly sophisticated access or a serious failure in safeguarding customer information. This further supports that this was a deception-based scam, not a simple customer-authorised action. • Reference live transactions on my account in real time • Quote sensitive card details • Spoof your official number and carry out a structured callback process It is also notable that £22,441 was recovered by a receiving bank, confirming the funds were traceable and reinforcing that this was not a straightforward case of customer error. The matter is now with the Financial Ombudsman Service, where I am confident an independent review will assess whether your classification and decision were appropriate. I’ve been with Alica Bank for almost a year now, and honestly, it’s been one of the best banking experiences I’ve ever had.
