Review of the John Lewis, Pet Insurance:

Try leaving them!

1
A lot of positive reviews for JL pet insurance are around initial set up. That and their customer service (bar when you try to leave them) are great. However.... Every year you will be stung with huge premium increases even if you make no claims/ the claims you make are for one-off (not ongoing/ lifelong) issues. I was an idiot and kept paying it for 12+ years (ending on £95pm to insure a Yorkie that I've paid 95% of the vet's bills myself) because they cover your pet for life. Believe me this gains you no grace with them - they will never budge on the cost because they know they're one of the only providers who offer life-time. But when you look at what you can claim back for a life-long illness be aware; you have to pay quite a lot yourself first - luckily my pup didn't have a lifelong issue but had she it would have rendered the policy nigh-on worthless, depending on the ongoing costs. Their claim-back process is stuck in the 90's, none of it's truly online, you have to print things out and email everyone yourself trying to get back any money you want (after their hefty excess -which also sneakily increases some years) ... it's tiresome to the point you have to question whether any claim is worth your time. Then, when you finally can't afford to be with them and you try to leave - good luck! I cancelled my policy on 12/8/20 by email, no reply by 09/09/20 so I called to cancel. I got an email the same day replying to my email of the 12th asking me if I wanted to cancel in language that made no sense 'please let me know so I can do the needful' (?) and as I had cancelled by phone already and my email clearly stated I wished to cancel I disregarded it. If you cancel a policy by email a provider's response should not be to ignore you for a month, for you to repeatedly chase to then reply asking you if you want to cancel. 4th Jan 21 and my bank text me about an account I no longer use saying I'm being charged for unauthorised use because JL have been taking £95pm for the last 5 months after my policy was cancelled by email and phone. I called JL - on hold for 30 mins to get through, got through put on hold for another 5 mins when I did, got cut off, no call back. I called again, on hold for 30 mins to get through and the lady said that they need to check with their underwriters that they can refund me - even though they can see I emailed to cancel, and there is a call with no notes on the day I called to cancel. I will have to wait for 48 hours to find out if the underwriter's accept my cancellation and will back-date the money owed to me. All because JL didn't cancel my policy as requested by me. £500 for their mistake and rather than refund me and accept the loss if the underwriter says no - I have to accept the loss if they do? I've spent about £10k with them and this is the goodbye I get. Imagine if I went into a JL store and helped myself to £500 worth of stuff and on being stopped by security said 'You'll need to wait 48 hours while I check with my friend if you can have it back'. JL would have me arrested. They will happily steal from you and say that though. If you take a policy out with them it will be the most boring, expensive, experience of your life - you have to get everything in writing and be spot on with your own admin because they cannot be trusted. No Claims but 80% Increase in Premium

1
WE have 2 Labradors, both currently in good health, and neither have had claims made in the last insurance year, however, John Lewis have decided to make fantastic increases in the Insurance Premiums of each. Last August (2024) we re-insured one Lab and the Premium rose from £249 to £376, which was bad enough, but this week (April'25) we received a letter from John Lewis Insurance telling us that they made mistake and the Premium should have been £447.66, "but don't worry, we don't have to pay the difference"! Unbelievable! We won't be re-newing again. Reviewed on: 11th April 2025

Chihuahua x never once claimed in 6 years and price...

1
Chihuahua x never once claimed in 6 years and price gone up 50 per cent. I asked why - 1 year older and i live in London. I went with John Lewis because of the reputation but its appalling- customer services was fobbing off. Not interested at all. Couldn’t explain is shorter life dogs were even higher premiums. Told if I went on line even with John Lewis that they wouldn’t honour it. Don’t be scammed. Just find an insurer who wants to insure your pet. John Lewis don’t. Very sad Reviewed on: 1st April 2025

John Lewis Pet Insurance - SCAM!

1
John Lewis Pet Insurance - SCAM! Paying policy for over a year refused to pay out for £150 as apparently was a pre-existing condition even though it wasn't. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. Reviewed on: 3rd February 2025

50 % Increase For No Reason

Just got my renewal cover sent to me, 50% increase then there has never been a claim and my dog is still young and healthy. John Lewis are just ripping of dog owners to fill the gaps in their P&L Reviewed on: 8th November 2024

Only use if you're never going to make a claim

1
Refuse to pay our claim. First they stated 'we've carried out a full review of your request and are unable to accept your claim as you were not insured with us for the previous year. When we proved to them we had been with them continually for the previous 12 months, they then came back two weeks later stating they can't pay our claim as it is linked to a previous condition. The claim I made has nothing to do with a previous condition. They have not answered any of our questions in our emails. They have no one available to discuss our case over the phone and promise callbacks that never happen. This bunch of con artists are riding on an old and formerly trust brand. The Pet insurance is underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance. so I will do my best to stay well clear of both of these rip off merchants Reviewed on: 1st October 2024

Disgusted my policy has doubled

Very poor product and customer service from John Lewis

1
As a loyal John Lewis customer we were really disappointed by their pet insurance. The price seemed good but it turns out they are unwilling to pay out for claims, and use any excuse to avoid it. Communication is awful and slow too, and I've wasted ours trying to make a perfectly legitimate claim. No where near the standard of other pet insurance we've used. Really disappointed in this service from John Lewis. Reviewed on: 19th August 2024

in our experience they use any excuse not to pay claims

in our experience they use any excuse to try and get out of paying any claims, not communication just poor all round, puts the John Lewis Brand to shame Reviewed on: 14th June 2024

70% increase from last year despite NO CLAIMS.

1
4 year old Border Collie. No claims. Healthy and active. JL has just increased my premium by 70%. Absolutely furious about such an unwarranted hike. The industry should be monitored and increases capped when NO CLAIMS have been made. Reviewed on: 29th May 2024

Dick Turpin is now selling pet Insurance !

1
At renewal John Lewis have more than DOUBLED my pet insurance for my little cat wanting over £600 for the year. I had one claim for £85 so expected a small increase but this is daylight robbery. In fact I suggested they now take to standing by the road in a mask, brandishing a pair of pistols. I have told them to cancel my policy at renewal and I’ll just pay as and when Oscar needs medical care. Absolute money grabbing charlatans ! Reviewed on: 19th March 2024
