Review of the M&S Bank - Marks and Spencer, Current Account:

Farce

1
We were drawn to the account by the generous switching bonus so moved our joint account, but had we known how hard we'd have to work to get it we'd have thought twice. Pretty much everything that could go wrong did: they couldn't find me through credit search (other banks have with no probs) so we had to make a 50 mile round trip to the nearest branch to prove my identity...where they kept us waiting over an hour, because the address was slightly different on my two identifying letters...not different relevant details mind you, just one said 'Durham' and one said 'Durham, County Durham'. When I tried to explain that given the house number and postcode were the same the rest was irrelevant they talked over me, patronised me then left me unattended for ages while they went to phone someone about it..meanwhile due to the partitioned cubicle set up I could hear them greeting other customers (no privacy!) and offering them hot drinks - I wasn't offered so much as a cup of water despite being kept there much longer, which hardly seemed fair. Eventually everything was sorted and we went home, thinking our troubles were over. If only! The joining incentive wasn't paid correctly so I had to chase it up (took several phonecalls), my husband's bank card didn't work, the M&S reward scheme points didn't track properly on at least two occasions, the online banking page was often out of action...had high hopes for this account, but sadly not impressed and will be switching again soon. Swtiching was so painful I pulled out

1
I tried to make an appointment to switch my current account, but couldn't get through. I then visited Braehead branch, and made an appointment. They couldn't give me one for over two weeks. Come the day of the appointment, I forgot my bag, and therefore my driving licence and the Debit Card / Account Number of the bank I was switching from. I still had utility bills, including my Council Tax bill, and an expired passport as alternative means of identity. Also, I offered to bring the forgotten documents in at a later point, and suggested we just get on with setting up the account. But they couldn't do that. The only thing they could offer was another appointment in more than two weeks time. Again. So I just pulled out of the process. If this is what M&S thinks is \new fashioned banking\" I'm sure the branch managers must all like their penny farthing \""company cars\"". This bank is dreadful. And reading other reviews regarding off-shore call centres. looks like a I dodged a bullet. It's just not worth the hassle switching for a poxy gift card.""" Reviewed on: 17th June 2017

Telephone Customer service terrible

1
Lengthy automated phone calls, entering account numbers and pushing various options are required before speaking to (non UK ) call centre advisors for a simple account query is so out of date, inefficient and costly for customers. Queries dealt with ineffectively.....unnecessary frustration resulted in my closing the account. First telephone query ever in years....and the last! Reviewed on: 16th June 2017

easy switch, good service

great service on the phone, very efficient, no problems switching to them Reviewed on: 7th June 2017

Good but you have to pay

3
Good service but you have to pay each month. I'm not sure if its worth it even with the reward vouchers. Reviewed on: 30th May 2017

Insanely difficult to open an account

1
Don't expect to be photocopying multiple identity documents, getting them signed by solicitors/IFAs, etc to open a simple account. Even then, they were ridiculously picky about one missing phone number by the signature. Gave up on the whole thing and switched seamlessly to a competitor instead, all done online with no tortuous phone calls or making vast amounts of paperwork. Reviewed on: 26th May 2017

Falsely claims "New fashioned banking". It's actually well behind the times

1
Pathetic app for smartphones with no ability to transfer funds or pay bills. Website not much better but requires carrying pathetic plastic code generator for access so far from customer friendly. No use of modern technology and years behind what other banks are doing. Primitive, basic and frankly pathetic. Definitely not the modern bank they advertise. Reviewed on: 21st May 2017

Poor customer service and poor internet banking

1
I was rejected my switching incentive as I closed my old account myself! The internet banking set up is very poor compared to NatWest or first direct. Limited and cheap looking web site in internet banking. I Will definitely be using the switching service to leave them!!! Reviewed on: 12th May 2017

Unprofessional

1
I opened a savings account online. My application was successful, it's been a month since the application and I have not received any correspondence by post or email. I called them a few times and was told my account is active and the documents are in the post. I believe they should stick to selling clothes, because they seem out of their depth in the banking sector. Reviewed on: 12th May 2017

One Month lost my mail, account was in the wrong name

1
What a waste of a month, so much for the website quick and easy set up !!!! to start they spelt my name wrong so had to start again then the address was wrong and after one month still no bank account, no idea how there still in buisness ...... Reviewed on: 11th May 2017
