Review of the M&S Bank - Marks and Spencer, Current Account:

Farce

1
We were drawn to the account by the generous switching bonus so moved our joint account, but had we known how hard we'd have to work to get it we'd have thought twice. Pretty much everything that could go wrong did: they couldn't find me through credit search (other banks have with no probs) so we had to make a 50 mile round trip to the nearest branch to prove my identity...where they kept us waiting over an hour, because the address was slightly different on my two identifying letters...not different relevant details mind you, just one said 'Durham' and one said 'Durham, County Durham'. When I tried to explain that given the house number and postcode were the same the rest was irrelevant they talked over me, patronised me then left me unattended for ages while they went to phone someone about it..meanwhile due to the partitioned cubicle set up I could hear them greeting other customers (no privacy!) and offering them hot drinks - I wasn't offered so much as a cup of water despite being kept there much longer, which hardly seemed fair. Eventually everything was sorted and we went home, thinking our troubles were over. If only! The joining incentive wasn't paid correctly so I had to chase it up (took several phonecalls), my husband's bank card didn't work, the M&S reward scheme points didn't track properly on at least two occasions, the online banking page was often out of action...had high hopes for this account, but sadly not impressed and will be switching again soon. Horrible Online banking experience

1
The website appears to have several bugs or failings that have not been fixed for weeks. The code generator for verifying payments etc is horrible. Tiny buttons, plus users cannot replace the battery, so it would be very inconvenient if the battery died while abroad, the account would be inaccessible. (I have a Nationwide one where user can replace the battery) Reviewed on: 21st December 2019

TRANSFERS BETWEEN ACCOUNTS

1
M&S is probably the worst bank I have ever been with. I cannot transfer funds from my Current Account directly to my Credit Card account. When asked why, I was told I could use my M&S debit card which would take around 2 or more days. This is daft when nearly all other banks allow this simple transfer between accounts. M&S Current Account App

1
M&S have introduced what should be a better banking experiencing but Online banking and the App, compared to other banks is very Poor. I understand that security has to be paramount, but existing DD and SO I have to log in via website and the card reader before I can go via App. Come on M&S all those details should have been transferred over immediately like other banking apps. I hate to say it but I am very close to closing my account. Reviewed on: 12th December 2019

M&S Current Account

Very tedious login mechanic where you always need to have a pin device to use online banking. Reviewed on: 23rd November 2019

Worst bank possible

1
Only leaving 1 star because I can't leave 0 stars! Everything they could mess up on, they have done. I have a M&S loan and an M&S joint account. It took them 3 months to set up the monthly repayments because they kept "losing my paperwork". Then they with held my wages for 5 days in a random floating account, leaving me unable to pay my mortgage. Then my grandmother gave me a £5k cheque which they took out of her account TWICE leaving her thousands of pounds overdrawn. They have now wrongly taken a £300 repayment off me 4 days early, also leaving me hundreds of pounds overdrawn. Their communication is awful, they're always losing paperwork, don't implicate any changes you make to your account. Nothing positive to say - AVOID!! Reviewed on: 28th October 2019

Online Banking and the App are so outdated

1
I've just moved my current account to M&S, and I regret the decision. I wanted to use the app for my banking, but the M&S app is so poor - it's basically a viewer of your statement. You cannot make payments or review Direct Debits or Standing Orders through the app - this is truly going back in time. Accesing my account online is painful too, having to use the mini keypad thing that you're obliged to carry around. M&S has a good reputation, but sadly not for banking in my experience. Reviewed on: 11th June 2019

Like going back in time!

1
I recently transferred my bank account to M&S and have been really disappointed. While I understand that security is paramount, you can't transfer money to someone from your mobile (if new) - you have to log-in via their website, and you can't do that without the stupid calculator-type thing! It is so annoying and I am regretting moving to them. Once it hits August, and my £5 a month of M&S vouchers is over, I will be moving to someone else sharpish. M&S needs to move with the times! Reviewed on: 3rd May 2019

CUSTOMER SERVICE POOR

1
Overlooked payment in March due to unclear statements online. Statement dates unclear and have been unable to pay them by faster payment previously as I do with all my other cards to ensure no late payments are ever made. Only method of payment was debit card which takes a few days yo clear. Be careful when using this card I have lost my confidence using their services Reviewed on: 6th April 2019

TIME WASTERS

1
Twice in 6 weeks I have had a transaction denied, both transactions were to well known UK companies. Customer services are conducted in some far off country where English is not the first language. It took quite some time to navigate through the telephone system, making the correct choices before getting to talk to someone. I am told my transactions were denied for ‘security purposes’. I’ve never, ever had an issue when I used a Tesco card or an Adam Bank card. So, M&S, Hear it here, I do not have time for your faff, or your second rate, third world based customer services. I will be cancelling my account. Reviewed on: 25th February 2019

Awful!

1
I ignored all the bad reviews and have made the biggest mistake transferring to them. They are worst than awful. Opened a bank account, credit card, home insurance and saving account with them and now need a loan that they have refused. Their security checks for the opening of the bank account and the credit card have gone against my excellent credit score. How ridiculous is that. Joined in Oct 18 leaving Feb 19. Forget all the freebies they offer when you join as you'll eventually pay for them. Reviewed on: 1st February 2019
