The Nationwide FlexDirect current account pays interest on your money and you can earn cashback on debit card purchases for the first 12 months.

If you’re eligible for an overdraft, the first £50 is interest free. The FlexDirect account has to be managed online or over the phone, not at the branch.

Solid but uninspired bank choice

Nationwide, while a stalwart in the UK banking sector, leaves much to be desired in terms of innovation. Their online and mobile banking platforms, while functional, lack the modern flair and advanced features that other competitors offer. In addition, their customer service, while satisfactory, can at times be slow to respond. Although Nationwide's range of financial products is extensive, their offerings may not always be as competitive as those from other banks. Consider Nationwide as a solid, if somewhat uninspired, banking choice. Reviewed on: 15th February 2024

The bank account that won't let you send money

Never wanted to go back to this bank but wanted the £200 switch. Have to use a card reader every single time I try to pay anyone (even if I've paid them before) which is completely impractical. Rang nationwide, they won't help, and still haven't even sent me a card reader yet and it's been weeks. They won't even transfer the amounts I want over the phone when I call up. So I literally can't even send anyone money. Which is the main thing you need a bank account for... person I just off the phone to had no solution for me. I can't wait to change banks back again, only just changed and already having terrible experiences. Now stuck unable to pay rent and one very angry landlord. Cheers nationwide! Worst bank I have every come across.

Weeks ago a member of their staff cancelled our debit cards by mistake. THEIR MISTAKE. Eventually, they sent the replacements but they didn't turn up, so they have now ordered some more replacement cards. This has been going on for weeks and all the time we have no access to a cashpoint, we can't buy anything from a shop or anything online. Do they care? They say they are sorry but do nothing. AVOID. Bad customer service

I went on the chat, and they couldn’t help me they said I had to phone in, after waiting 20 mins I got though and explained my issue they said they couldn’t help so I had to wait another 30 mins for the next department who then said they couldn’t help and I have to be transferred to the team I was speaking to at the start, I told him not to transfer me so he checked with his boss and said they couldn’t help with my arranged overdraft interest as my reasoning wasn’t excepted.
