Review of the Policy in Practice, Better Off Calculator:

A very useful tool

I use this all the time to calculate affordability of rent in the private sector and, provided I am given the correct information, it is very accurate. I advise my clients to use it when they find a property in the private sector, so that they know exactly what, after they have paid rent and council tax, they will have left for food, travel, bills, etc. For me, the benefits calculator is invaluable. Useful in Homelessness Services

I work in Homelessness Services and often need to consider affordability for referral purposes, and with people moving between accommodation types respectively using UC and HB for housing costs. I use the calculator myself and signpost service users and other professionals to it, especially when they are trying to make sense of a possible future change including changing work hours Reviewed on: 15th May 2025
