A very comprehensive tool...

I have used the Better off Calculator for 6 years, since it was brought in at Rotherham Council, to assist my customers to see how they will benefit from moving into employment. It has been very useful in identifying benefits the customers may not have been claiming but were possibly entitled to. I like it because you can use it simply to do this, but also because you can work through a detailed budgeting exercise with a customer which can help to identify areas where the customer could make savings. Better Off With Policy in Practice

At Citizens Advice we rely a lot on Policy and Practice to give our clients advice about their benefits. We have found that we are better off using their 'better off calculator' rather than any of the others on the market. It is simple and intuitive to use for both the advisers and clients. It goes into sufficient detail to enable us to help clients with momentous decisions. The synopsis given following a 'better off calculation' is well laid out and useful for clients to take away with them to consider. Hats off to the Policy in Practice Better off Calculation! I use the better off calculator on a regular basis as it is part of our full debt appointment advice protocol. It is definitely a useful and informative resource and its quick and efficient to use. I have had some experiences where the benefit check information does not properly correspond with a clients actual position and where all the details have been correctly submitted so it can be hard to determine why a discrepancy exists. More specifically it can be relating to a clients UC housing allowance where it will specify a completely different amount to what was submitted in terms of what the client is actually receiving for their housing allowance/ reflective of their statement and their household information.
