Housing Inclusion Officer's opinion

As a Housing Inclusion Officer who's bulk of cases involve residents in financial hardship including assessing for Discretionary Housing Payments, I heavily rely on Better Off Calculator to show residents what they should be getting in eligible benefits. I especially love the Budgeting tool, where we can compare what they are spending to the National Averages though at time I do find these averages to be quite low considering inflation. It may be a good idea to relook at these amounts more regularly to reflect the countries current financial climate. Reviewed on: 14th April 2026

I use this for my clients on a daily basis to establish their affordability for future housing. My clients are those fleeing domestic abuse and often very traumatised. this tool is very easy to use and it allows me to go back and adjust and review at every step of their application. Using the better of calculator has helped me show my participants how better off they would be in sustainable employment, and the difference between what they receive on universal credit to PAYE.
