I use this tool on a very regular basis within my role allocating Social Housing to customers. It's straight forward & easy to use, as long you have all the relevant information for the customer & is a very useful tool for us to be able to confirm if customers will receive assistance with paying their rent & to advise customers of any benefits that they are currently not receiving. Easy to use, and a fantastic tool for customers!

I regularly use the Better Off Calculator with customers to help them understand how moving into work will impact their financial situation. It’s a really useful tool that provides a clear breakdown of how wages, benefits, and other entitlements interact, and often helps to address concerns about whether working will leave them better off. What I’ve found is that many customers are pleasantly surprised to see they would actually gain more from being in employment, especially when in-work benefits such as Universal Credit top-ups, help with childcare, and travel support are included. The calculator also shows a comparison between different work scenarios—such as part-time versus full-time hours—so customers can make informed decisions that suit their circumstances. Using the calculator helps build confidence, as it replaces uncertainty with real figures and personalised outcomes. It also opens up a constructive conversation about budgeting, wages to aim for, and what support is available during the transition to work. Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone who’s unsure whether work will make them financially better off. It’s a helpful starting point in creating realistic job goals and feeling more in control of your future. Reviewed on: 16th June 2025

PiP are very responsive and proactive in ensuring we are using their tools are effectively as possible. Their tools are user friendly and really useful for teams across the council to help our residents. We have seen great benefit for residents and staff who have saved time using the BoC as part of homelessness assistance and advice to make sure people can make informed decisions about their housing. I use the benefit Calculator for my work advising people about their benefit entitlement and it works wonder at giving a breakdown of the award, while also then explaining additional entitlement they might be also entitled to based on their situation. The PiP staff are usually very quick to respond if you have an issue with using the calculator. Reviewed on: 6th June 2025

Better Off Calculator

As part of my role at Maximus, I have gained hands-on experience using the Better Off Calculator to support customers in understanding the financial implications of moving into employment. This tool has been instrumental in helping individuals make informed decisions by providing clear comparisons between their current benefit entitlements and potential earnings from employment. I have used the calculator during one-to-one appointments to: Assess financial outcomes for customers considering job offers or changes in working hours. Demonstrate the impact of employment on benefits such as Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, and Council Tax Reduction. Support budgeting conversations by outlining net income projections and helping customers plan for transitions into work. Build confidence in customers by showing that they would be financially better off in employment, which often helps overcome barriers to work. Reviewed on: 5th June 2025
