Review of the Swinton Insurance, Car insurance:

If I could give them ZERO I would

I have used Swinton on and off for the past 25 years so was happy to take car insurance with them in November 2023. In July 2024 we moved house and as you do started notifying change of address. So I dutifully did with Swinton. That's when the nightmare began. Spoke to Toby and explained I needed to change the address only on my motor policy. So he asked all the relevant questions and said he needed to submit it to the underwriters to see if there would be a increase in the premium. He came back and mumbled something about a rejection code as the area was unacceptable. I asked him what he meant by that and he couldn't answer. Now the area I moved to has high end value houses in a semi rural location, certainly not a crime hotspot! He put me on to Lindi who just kept stating the area was unacceptable but I can cancel this policy and they would put me with a new company. Why, I asked? Please tell me why this area is unacceptable? She just kept saying the insurance company stated it was not an acceptable area. I asked her to verify who the insurance company was. AGEAS came the reply. I was stunned. We have a second car, insured by my wife, and she successfully changed the address the day before with no additional premium. It is insured through AGEAS!! Her reply was genuinely incoherent by which time my wife had entered the room curious why I was on the phone so long and started listening to the what was happening. I asked to speak to a supervisor for an explanation. I got Karen. I explained what had happened and wanted an explanation why two people living at the same address received such polar opposite responses. Again she appeared not to understand and stuck to the script of it being an unacceptable area. I recall saying regardless that my wife lives in the same house and that AGEAS accepted she is in an acceptable area (no additional premium) but Swinton say it's not. All she did was keep offering me a new policy with a different company or a cancellation of the policy. I asked for quotes for a new policy with a different insurance company, however her eventual reply was that none would insure me. As my wife was simultaneously obtaining quotations from a comparison website this was obviously another blatant lie. I believe this is the procedure when a customer won't change to another company to build Swinton's revenue stream. They get booted. Needless to say the policy with Swinton is now cancelled. I urge everyone to avoid this company at all costs. I dread to think what may have happened if I had ever had to make a claim through Swinton. Reviewed on: 5th July 2024

Felt I had been conned

Took out car insurance with Swintons online for a good price ,A couple of months later I had to change the cover to a different car so I rang them only to be told that the company insuring my vehicle would not insure me because the car I wanted to change the insurance to had a factory immobaliser and alarm.He then proceeded to get me a quote from another company which was for £350.00. I told him I didn't want it as I felt it was far to expensive, I then went online to find swintons offering the same insurance for £169.00. I opted for another insurance company slightly dearer rather than give my money to swintons con insurance. Having spoken to them on the phone written to them confirming the cancellation of the policy they then send a letter threatening me because I cancelled my direct debit .They also charged me for the Privelige of cancelling.It wasn't until this all happened that I remembered I had used this company to insure a motor scooter some years ago ,when I sold the scooter and wanted to cease the policy they tried to charge me £70.00 to cancel the policy when I only had three payments of £13.00 left to pay. So beware of this con artist company they may be ok if you don't need to change vehicles but if you do look out. Reviewed on: 23rd August 2016

Amazing help after keys stolen

Had a fantastic experience after our car keys were stolen from our house. Rang insurance and told where to take car to have locks changed, paperwork ready when we got there, courtesy car given, extremely polite, would never have expected such good service! Reviewed on: 16th August 2016

Big On Line Con

I got a price on line that I agreed to and got a Quote from Swinton with a time scale on it I acted within that time scale Filling in all my details (Bank Ect.) only to be told at the end that I had to phone them. This I did and the quote given then changed to almost double with no apparent changes to my info. HOW CAN THIS BE THIS BE LEGAL. I WOULD SAY TO EVERYONE THINKING OF USING SWINTON DONT GIVE YOUR DETAILS IN FACT DONT USE THEM . I Got a better deal in the end from RAC. Reviewed on: 5th August 2016

out to scam you

Insured my car online, not a bad price cheaper than the rest as I was paying monthly. All set up nice and easy, all paperwork came through very quickly. 1 week last got a phone call to say for one reason or another my insurance would be nearly £500 more than they originally set up. They could not explain why, so i decided to cancel as the lady on the phone was very unhelpful and they charged me just over £100, only had the insurance for a week. SHARP PRACTICE!

Poor customer care

They reported that they hadn't had no claims. They wrote to is whilst we we're away on a fortnights holiday and then billed us regardless. Reviewed on: 27th July 2016

Hard to deal with and they charge you for everything

Needed to go to post office to send signed docs back instead of scan and email. They charge £24 if they don't receive within 2 weeks. If you wish to cancel within 15 days. They charge you £25. It seems a money making scheme and wish had known before taking the policy out Reviewed on: 22nd July 2016
