Review of the Ecology Building Society, Savings:

Savings to support imaginative carbon-saving projects and houses

The Ecology stated life in 1981 with a capital of £5000 and an aspiration to become an ethical lender for sustainable housing projects. According to Wikipedia: The purpose of the Society is to achieve the greatest degree of environmental sustainability. It lends money to create and maintain sustainable housing stock, preferably with sustainable communities and green enterprise. Its funding is secured with the least degree of environmental degradation possible, and with the greatest degree of stakeholder endorsement obtainable. It has filled a niche role all its life and now has assets approaching £200 million. Its AGMs before lockdown attracted hundreds of savers and borrowers and provided a forum for discussions on all the green issues of the day. I am proud to be a saver with the Ecology. Ecology Online Banking

Only gave 4 stars because of the Online Banking, which is not the most up-to-date system. (There is not yet an app, but I believe this is in development). Savings: Good value for money, ISAs have good savings rate in line with other providers. Reviewed on: 11th April 2025

ethical, and excellent customer service

My experience

Staff answer calls promptly, are helpful and friendly - real people! The Society has a policy to ensure the ratio of salaries between staff and CEO/management are fairer than most societies although the ratios are not as good as they were, which is a shame. Reviewed on: 31st March 2025

A small building society with big ambitions

Excellent Customer Service & Ethical Savings

I have been a saver with Ecology Building Society for a number of years. Their customer service is second to none: they are genuine and friendly and it is ALWAYS possible to speak to a human - no horrible call queues or phone bots. Any time I have had a query it has been quickly resolved. I like the fact that my savings are being put to genuinely green uses by the Society and that any interest my savings may generate is ethical. I thoroughly recommend them without hesitation. 35 years of ethical saving.

I've been saving with Ecology for 35 years and not only are the savings rates competitive, the AGMs and Member Meet-ups are very enjoyable. I particularly enjoy visiting the unusual venues and meeting like minded people who care about where their savings are invested. Reviewed on: 9th February 2025
