Not great, but cheap

I bought insurance from Hastiings Direct through a comparison site. When I checked my policy details I found that they had assumed wrong answers to questions that the comparison site didn't ask, so I had to phone them (30 minutes on hold) and get that changed. They wanted an extra ~£300 for changing "access to another vehicle" and "dependents" from no to yes - but they could cancel the policy and replace it with a new one for no change in price. More recently I phoned them again (again, half an hour on hold) to ask about fitting a tracker in case my bike is stolen. They said it would cost an additional £250 - for a change to the bike that should improve security - where is the logic? Some other motorbike insurers have a sensible approach to mods (e.g. Bennetts) and say that you don't need to tell them about cosmetic changes or accessories tat won't change the performance. Hastings want to know about every little thing, you can expect to be waiting on the phone for up to an hour (they have a phone app but it doesn't allow these changes) for the privilege of telling them, and the effect it has on your premium seems to be essentially random. Cheap and good customer service

I've been with them for years and they've always been cheapest. I had an issue with my renewal and moving house but they were very helpful and sorted it. Never had a claim so can't comment on that process. Reviewed on: 23rd August 2023

Extremely Disappointed

Recently tried to update my Vehicle insurance to business use. However every time I tried to make contact by phone, I was provided with an automated message that they were unavailable to take calls. I tried the live chat which was also unavailable. I finally managed to apply the alteration via their website and received an automated response with a date confirming when the changes would be made. This was about two weeks ago and I have still not heard anything and does not appear my policy has been updated. Very disappointed as I need the vehicle for work. I note it says they are a fast expanding company. Perhaps they should worry more about looking after their existing customers. Looking forward to my renewal date. Reviewed on: 17th August 2022

Did alright by me...

Had a spill and while not major did a few quids worth of damage. My bike was collected by a specialst bike recovery agent at the roadside with no dramas. I wish I had gone with the recommended repairer though. I insisted on staying local with the main dealer which was accommodated but they added items to the bill that wern't fitted and took an age and basically lied. Hastings took this up after I reported it to them which helped keep my claim down. All in all customer service only really matters when you need it and Hastings did alright. They don't get a 10 because of the charges they add for moving house or when you change bikes mid policy. On this front they are robbing gits. On renewal after my claim they wernt the cheapest but 12 months later they are again so I am back with them. As a side with any policy see what your quote is without declaring security devices and even see what it's like when parked on the drive instead of garaged. It didn't make too much difference to me and it leaves them less chance to find a get out if your bike is nicked. Friends experienced this when he got the bike out the garage and left it at the front while got ready to ride. In less than 10mins the bike was nicked and with no security fitted (about to ride it) and it not in the garage as declared has had a nightmare with the insurance company - thus wasn't Hastings but is made as a general point to consider. Impossible to contact them.

Worst customer service I have ever known. They are impossible to contact. If you email customer services they email you back saying you need to call them. If you want to cancel your policy you have to phone. Maybe they should invest some of their profits in staff to answer the phone now and again.
