The worst bank in the UK by far

I am a medium size business owner has has the unfortunate experience of banking with HSBC. They absolutely do not care about SME customers. Huge waiting times for calls, no relationship managers. It’s the worst customer service I have experienced and it’s consistently bad, and likely getting worss. Reviewed on: 5th November 2025

VANESSA - LINCOLN HSBC

We have had a number of recent meetings with Vanessa from the Lincoln Branch. The service we received was exemplary on all occasions. Vanessa has guided us through BACS payments; Transfer of house selling funds and ISA's. We are both in our seventies and have so far resisted on-line banking. Vanessa has offered to train us on use of the same and we both feel confident, given all her help and advice that we may eventually take the plunge! Zero customer service

Just opened a business account (quite an ideal in itself) and just received payment of our first invoice. Very exciting. We tried to make a payment only to find HSBC have frozen our account. Apparently they are complying with their legal obligations. What does that mean for us accessing our money? Both the payee and us are UK registered companies. Of course no one from the bank has contacted us and we can not speak to a human being about why or when access to our money will be restored. Very poor service no contact and no one to speak to. Lame horse of a bank

Having banked for over a decade with HSBC, I have seen fees increase, interest rates on saving fall to near zero, and absolutely no business support. Mistakes are frequent and customer service is slow and unhelpful but will always say sorry for not helping, which again, does little to help. Reviewed on: 23rd June 2025

Nervous Breakdown with HSBC

For over 50 years, I placed my trust in HSBC (formerly Midland Bank), holding four accounts with them. But in the past two years, that trust has been shattered. The frustration and struggle I have endured with their customer service have been nothing short of exhausting. For the past month, I have been trying—without success—to complete the FATCA process. Each time the form is rejected, yet no one is willing to guide my accountant on how to correct it. It feels like shouting into a void, with no real support or solutions. To make matters worse, I attempted to apply for a business loan, only to find that my only option was an impersonal online form—one that was promptly rejected, with no clarity on how to proceed. I am now desperately searching for a bank that genuinely values its customers and provides in-person assistance when needed. If you care about your time, sanity, and financial well-being, I strongly advise avoiding HSBC—unless you’re willing to endure endless frustration and disappointment. Reviewed on: 14th February 2025

Archaic, 19th century bank.

Archaic, 19th century bank. Can't do anything online without filling out forms that disappear into the ether. If anything is wrong with them, they don't speak to you. Locked out of telephone banking after mis typing my security pin by 1 digit, once. No second try. Took over a business using HSBC banking in JUNE, and now in January of the following year, I STILL don't have access to online banking. I absolutely, categorically, hate this bank. Been with HSBC for 46 years which means NOTHING to them

Been with HSBC for my business and private account since the age of 16 (I'm now 62) Never really gone overdrawn in all that time and never been charged for the accounts. Now just because they had to pay out millions on PPi (which I did not claim) they start charging me. Contact them requesting drop the charge for £8 per month. Sorry no was the answer. So this proves THE BIG BANKS don’t value long standing customers and loyalty, only profits. I’ve already closed my private account and soon will close Business account and my Credit card with HSBC… See ya! Reviewed on: 19th July 2024

Wish I never went to them for the account. No replies. No responses. No updates. Constantly being asked to wait a call back but nothing happens. No assistance on the phone when you get through.
