Disaster of a credit card company - total fail! We recently tried adding our John Lewis Partnership Card to Apple Pay, only to find it blocked by NewDay, the card provider. Shockingly, this happened... Read more Reviewed on: 24th December 2024

Review of the John Lewis, Partnership Card:

"JLP" aka Just Lost Plot.

1
Thanks to Newday telling me I am ineligible for the new JL Partnership card despite excellent credit score, 5 figure credit limit, etc, etc 31 October 2022 will mark the end of my JL Partnership card and circa 50 years loyal relationship with JL/W. Thereafter I won't be think of JL or W as my first port of call whenever Ii buy anything, No more recommending JL and/or W. It'll be just another shop which once upon a time had what it took but is no more. I have extolled the virtues of Newday on this board and other sites so the high esteem in which I hold Newday is renowned. As a gesture of goodwill to anyone that may not know this - I didn't until last week - a credit score fluctuates, depending upon how much of one's credit limit has been used at the time. For example if your credit limit is £10,000 and according to the soft check (meaning that your credit score isn't affected) the score is excellent, it doesn't matter that you pay the whole of the balance on each statement. What matters to the credit score is how much of the credit you have used at the date/time you check your credit score. Paying the whole of the balance is past performance: it does not create a binding precedent for the future. Until you receive your next statement and pay the balance on that statement, as far as the credit score is concerned you owe x% of the limit with no certainty whether the amount owed would be repaid in full by the payment date. The existing JL Partnership card can be used as an ordinary credit but really it's a store card that, because it is provided by HSBC, can be used as credit card anywhere. (Unlike Newday's version which can't.) JLP is not the most worldly organisation so probably would never have envisaged let alone intended that its cardholders would spend perhaps the bulk of the credit limit elsewhere and only a relatively small proportion at JL/W. But by so doing cardholders get JLP vouchers regardless, meaning that over the course of a year a high spending cardholder could easily accumulate more than £100 in vouchers to be redeemed at JL /W without having bought anything at JL/W. (I used to get more than £200 vouchers which I saved for use at Christmas.) It is advisable to close your credit card account with JLP before the expiry date otherwise the credit score might be told the bank has cancelled it in which case your credit score would be affected adversely. Just for fun, I am considering this paying all but £1 of the balance due and leave the £1 outstanding and gathering interest for years to come. Or until HBC write it off which the earlier. Diabolical

1
I have already cancelled this account so dire is New Day. I put in a complaint to John Lewis who simply forwarded it to New Day and then, like many people, I received a letter with appalling grammar telling me the "complaint had not been upheld". JL need to take responsibility for their terrible mistake in hiring New Day, I can only assume because they thought it would save them money not lose them customers in droves. Complaining to John Lewis about their new card just sends you to the card provider

1
I wanted to complain to John Lewis about the terms they've negotiated with new credit card provider New Day. Because the window between statement and payment dates has halved to 2 weeks compared to old provider. New Day simply told me that was the agreement with JL. No warning of this in the literature about changing provider. When i changed my payment date they changed the statement date (without telling me) so i ended up with 2 bills in the same month. I tried to register the issue with John Lewis and they took basic details, said they would raise a complaint form and someone would be in touch by email or phone the next day to find out more. Turns out John Lewis weren't raising it internally but with New Day so im now in the New Day complaints system. Which is rubbish. After several days I got an email from New Day, not a phone call to say someone would be in touch. No-one got in touch. Several weeks on i got a letter to say my complaint is being 'reviewed'. They dont have my complaint, just a summary of my issue as raised with the lady at John Lewis. I have no record of what parts of our conversation she sent on to them. I only gave her the bare bones of what i would have included in a proper complaint. The old card worked so well for years. Am very unhappy. Reviewed on: 12th December 2022

Looking for a new card

1
What a shame. This new JL card is a total disaster with zero customer service. After many satisfactory years with the old JL card I am now looking for a new provider. Reviewed on: 11th December 2022

Card & app good. Unable to balance transfer - very bad!!

2
So the app for the credit card works well & is easy to navigate. BUT you can't balance transfer your debt from this card to another provider!! Or reduce your credit limit on it. Hmmm! May well be looking elsewhere very soon. Reviewed on: 11th December 2022

Balance transfer to other card

1
You cant balance transfer the money out of this card to clear the debt. This card is not recognised by other banks. There are no PDF style statements on line just a total of whats due. This is unbelievable as you are forced to either pay off the entire amount with a debit card to avoid interest charges or part pay and incur interest charges WONT BE USING THIS CARD AGSIN!! New Day No New Dawn

1
I have been a customer of JL for over 40 years and have always seen them as the standard of modern shopping. I have refused a new card since I was told that my original card has now been withdrawn. I applied to New Day for a new one as I was instructed to do by JL only to be told that I do not meet the requirements. I am in semi retirement now but still have an income of over £50k pa. What a sorry state JL have come to, the chair person needs to consider who their real customers are and look after them, they won’t get help from the so called younger shoppers so they should consolidate their existing and long term shoppers and keep them sweet Reviewed on: 10th December 2022

Absolute disgrace - the new John Lewis Chairman should be FIRED immediately she is set to RUIN JOHN LEWIS

1
Ex - Loyal John Lewis 'Partnership Card' holder and Customer. NOTICE THE EX- STATEMENT. Should any company treat its long-standing loyal customers with absolute disdain and lack of respect, they should fail and go out of business. I hope you read this JL as you have LOST a life-time loyal customer , who has spent many thousands on JL expensive purchases over many decades - well lets say enough is enough! Since you farmed out your HSBC credit card to the UTTERLY APPALLING JOKERS 'NEW-DAY' WHO ARE CLEARLY AN UNFIT FINANCE COMPANY WITH ONE OF THE WORST REPUTATIONS IN THE WHOLE FINANCE INDUSTRY AND WHY 'AMAZON' DUMPED THEM. CLEARLY JOHN LEWIS KNOWS THEY HAVE BEEN FINED OVER £1000,000 BY THE FSA AND YET THEY DECIDE TO GET IN TO BED WITH THE SHOWER OF CLOWNS TO SAVE SOME MONEY!!!!!!! JOHN LEWIS - YOU ARE ON THE PRECIPICE AND IF YOU CONTINUE WITH YOUR DELINQUENT DISREGARD FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS - - - - YOUR DAYS ARE NUMBERED ------ AND YOU WILL FAIL AND BECOME YET ANOTHER BANKRUPT COMPANY!! I see the bank that New Day use to process payments (or not) have been fined £ 107 million for failures to operate securely and risking financial crime . Reviewed on: 9th December 2022

John Lewis abandons loyal customers to Newday

1
Well not at all what you expect from John Lewis, the new partnership card handled by Newday is not a suitable substitute for the original. Credit term has been cut by 10 days and should you leave a balance amount interest is charged on all new purchases as well. Shall pay off full amount and curtail further usage. Reviewed on: 9th December 2022

Poor substitute

1
Worse on every measure - poor service and short time between statement print date and due payment - designed to demand interest and making it difficult to clear your balance Reviewed on: 8th December 2022
