Disaster of a credit card company - total fail! We recently tried adding our John Lewis Partnership Card to Apple Pay, only to find it blocked by NewDay, the card provider. Shockingly, this happened... Read more Reviewed on: 24th December 2024

Review of the John Lewis, Partnership Card:

Please dump Newday for a more reliable supplier

1
I couldn't agree more with the person who reported "New Day are Trashing John Lewis's reputation ". Trying to prepay for a large item is virtually imposible. Getting a credit limit anywhere near the one available with the previous card supplier (HSBC) is impossible and to add insult to injury, today my card is not being accepted, although it is nowhere near the credit limit. I have just tried to look at my transaction history and the site is "currently unavailable".PleaseJOHN LEWIS, PLEASE DUMP THIS USELESS NEWDAY CROWD. Reviewed on: 12th September 2024

Don't do it!

1
Feeling traumatised after being charged interest and late fee plus card automatically blocked till tomorrow. I have NEVER ever paid interest or been late paying and I'm approaching 69 yes. Received statement dated 18.12.22 on 6.1.23 stating minimum payment was due on 2.1. Finally got through to New Day and explained re postal strike. Paid by direct debit straight away but card blocked till tomorrow. Apparently I must ring again when next statement comes out to request refund of interest and late fee. There is such a short turn around between statement date and due date that this is likely to happen again whereas with the old JL card there was about 3 weeks. I am very upset and now considering changing to a new provider after all these years. Please don't sign up! Reviewed on: 6th January 2023

New John Lewis card a disaster for John Lewis

1
In October I switched to the new JL card operated by NewDay. A disaster from the outset. They failed to credit my first payment to my account then asked for it a second time. I foolishly paid what was asked without checking. They paid the money back to my bank using my card so according to them I still owe it. Communications with New Day are all but impossible with long waits and rude and incompetent staff. Thousands of people are complaining and getting nowhere. I had a JL card for 30 years - no problems. If it says John Lewis on the card John Lewis are ultimatemly responsible. I have written to the Chairman of JL and had a response. She is looking into it. JL neeeds to stop the rot before it becomes terminal. Reviewed on: 6th January 2023

Terrible decision by John Lewis to switch to NewDay as their credit card partner

1
John Lewis has always been my favourite store, but I have felt very let down by their decision to change credit card provider. It was all very easy to change - with the appeal of keeping reward points (and vouchers), but I was then very shocked to find my credit limit had been more than halved from £11k to £5k and despite requesting it to be changed I've been refused with no respect given to me being a very long-time partnership card holder (and high earner). Their reasoning is crap as well - totally vague. Added to the experience of what I read here and on other review sites, it's just so disrespectful to what must been a highly prized customer base to a financial supplier. I also find the payments to be annoying plus the constant verifications required to check purchases (finally conquered I guess by the trusted retailers option). All this just amounts to more admin - plus the stupid reminders to pay early. And now I can't make big purchases because of reduced credit limit the appeal of reward vouchers is lessened... And of course you cannot speak to anyone! Just so disappointed. John Lewis have seriously damaged their reputation with this "partnership". NewDay seem like a cowboy outfit in comparison to previous provider. Anyhow, over Christmas I have applied for two new credit cards with my bank and Amex and both were OKed easily - and with a higher credit limit. Only delay was postal strike but now I have them - bye bye John Lewis. Reviewed on: 5th January 2023

Shocking Customer Service

1
Having made a payment on 24th December, I received an email saying my payment was pending even though the money was taken from my bank account. I have now called New Day 6 times regarding this and they are literally the most unhelpful customer service team that I have ever come across, claiming it will take up to 10 days to find the money even though I have given them the reference number to locate it. I Will now incur interest fees on my bill which I am extremely angry about as I have never missed a payment before. Once this is settled I shall be closing my account, shame to tarnish the good name of John Lewis with an appalling credit company. Reviewed on: 5th January 2023

Credit Card chaos

1
I tried to make a payment and Newday emailed to say it was unsuccessful. I therefore tried again and the payment was successful. However Newday took both payments putting me into a bank overdraft. I have been told by Newday it will take 72 hours to refund the overpayment - why? I am seeking compensation for bank charges and I will then close the JL account. Shambles! Total mess

1
The decision by John Lewis to switch credit card providers has backfired badly. I have suffered no financial loss but the confusion and administration issues (ongoing as third party sites still seem to prefer my old moribund JL card) have been a real nuisance. Thanks to JL for the £5 credit voucher following my complaint to them. I shall still shop at JL but I am afraid I won't be using JL card - that is going in the shredder! Useless since Newday take over

My card gets rejected by half of online websites, absolute waste of time. Reviewed on: 3rd January 2023

Not impressed

1
Warning - 0% balance transfer doesn’t exist if you use your card to also buy with. Just been informed that because I bought items with the card, I’m now liable to interest payments until I clear the whole amount, including the transfer amount. Reviewed on: 3rd January 2023

Totally unimpressed

1
Had great difficulty understanding what has happened to my account. Have been charged late payment fee which was due to be refunded, but has not been yet. Charged interest on balance outstanding in spite of making payment by direct debit!. Am still arguing about that one. PIN changed without notification, so card refused in Waitrose. I could go on all day about this. I think JL need to get their act together better here. And the administration/accounting department at New Day seems to be shambolic. Reviewed on: 3rd January 2023

Make it impossible to pay off your card then charge late fees

1
Every month had to reset password to pay card balance online to point my login was locked each month and eventually gave up paying online, then tried paying over phone but either phone lines would be down or when calling them up would get interference on the line and other people in another language talking whilst it was ringing which seemed extremely fraudulent so gave up on that method in end. Eventually settled on paying by cheque each month which was a hassle itself so was relieved when they informed all customers that the card company was changing and to continue using the partnership card would have to reapply. Took the opportunity to switch to a different credit card company (M&S) which in comparison make it super easy to pay off credit card and check account balance whenever like via their secure app. Was then bombarded with letters, texts and emails from John Lewis for several months despite blocking their number asking me to apply for their new credit card. Out of spite they then charged a late payment fee of £15.67 on the very last payment I made to them (having never incurred any late fees in the 7 years I owned a partnership card) this was a cheque payment during the 2022 December Royal Mail postal strikes so I ensured I sent cheque extra early and the date written on the cheque corroborates this. The fact they would not take the postal strikes into account for their service users who can now only pay off their accounts by cheque due to their incapable and inefficient online and phone services shows what a despicable company John Lewis has become. They can have the extra £15 they decided to squeeze out out of malice as it’s good riddance to a sham company who is clearly on its a**e. Reviewed on: 2nd January 2023
