Credit Card chaos

I tried to make a payment and Newday emailed to say it was unsuccessful. I therefore tried again and the payment was successful. However Newday took both payments putting me into a bank overdraft. I have been told by Newday it will take 72 hours to refund the overpayment - why? I am seeking compensation for bank charges and I will then close the JL account. Shambles!
