Gold Plus Home Insurance.. that isn't

I woke at 05.00 to a kitchen ceiling leaking water onto the kitchen laminated floor and a steady dripping throught the downlighters and palster board. Turned water and electricity off, threw towels onto floor and ran upstairs to locate leak. Pipes go from airing cupboard under floor in back bedroom in to bathroom. No leaks visible in bathroom, cut bedroom carpet to get access to pipes but found no leaks. Went back to kitchen and removed one plaster board of ceiling showing wettest at outer wall below bathroom. Presumed turning water off had stopped leak. Called insurance 'Emergency' number and a Servowarm team turned up within 40mins, looked where I had looked and told me that if I could find the leak they could come back and fix it (I said that if I could find the leak, I could fix it) 5 mins after arriving they left. With pipes exposed, I turned the water back on but found no leak. After 24 hours of no further leakage and still unaware where the leak was, I poured a jug of water against the bathroom outer wall and saw the leak appear through the kitchen ceiling. The two sources of water here appear to be the shower or the washbasin, however the pipes are sound and dry. The conclusion I came to was that the washbasin tap had not been full turned off over night and through a design flaw of the sink, water tracked down the stem of the tap across the back of the sink onto the floor and through to the kitchen ceiling and floor. I informed the insurer (Ageas) the above information and asked about claiming for the water damage and damage done while investigating the leak. A very nice lady looked into my Gold Plus 'policy wording' ..and informed me that it looked like 'I caused the damage' and therefor couldn't claim. I despute that the wording under What is Not Covered:- "Criminal acts or deliberate damage or loss caused by you, your family or anyone living with you" is applicable, because it was 'not deliberate'. However that appears to be the end of it. I will now fix it all myself, but will never buy anything from the Post Office or underwritten by Aegeas ever again and urge others to think long and hard about doing so. This is a salutary lesson for me, that brings me to an inevitable conclusion that insurance is a rip-off. In future I will only take out the absolute minimum insurances (for anything) and only where it is mandatory. Reviewed on: 6th August 2025

Access to website details ..

I have been trying to access my policy on the website and although my log in details are correct and the password is correct it tells me my details are incorrect. When I try to reset my password I never receive the promised email. If I try and register anew it says my email is not found although when I rang they clearly had all details online. I thought they would sort this out but 10 days later, the same thing happened. Still no access to the website and when I ring there is only music, so not sure whether they are still working or not as it was just before 6. Really frustrated. Reviewed on: 14th March 2024

Terrible lack of communication routes for customers

1
I purchased a home insurance policy then wanted to cancel 3 days before it went live.... no means of doing this online so I called customer services and was told I couldn't cancel it until the day it goes live... what?? Logged in to my account and there is no means provided (even logged in) to do an online chat, send an email, or leave feedback. Basically, they have ensured they don't have to deal with grievances from pesky customers.. pathetic. Reviewed on: 12th February 2024

Worst company

Faulty hot water tank resulted in a leak which spread downstairs to living area. Plumber came out that evening when it should have been a heating engineer, so nothing he could do but take a picture. No hot water or heating so under my cover I’m due alternative accommodation, the accommodation that was offered is not suitable for my kids and dog. Also the hotels offered was too far away and some were in the city centre of Glasgow…. With a dog and two kids! I Now have heating from 3 fan heaters and need heat up water on the stove to bath the kids. Also spent around 7 hours on the phone yesterday speaking to over 10 different people from third party companies. One third party company deals with accommodations, another the contents claim, another the building side, the emergency aspect etc etc etc. Your past from pillar to post with no one taking accountability or control of your case. Do your sanity a favour and avoid at all costs. Reviewed on: 17th March 2023

Post Office Home Insurance

We took out the Gold package home insurance with the Post Office for my elderly mum. Last week the boiler stopped giving out hot water. Called them on Tuesday and reported this. An 'Engineer' arrived on Wednesday and removed the part that he thought from the boiler that needed replacing and advised us that he needed a part and would be back in the afternoon. He did not turn up until Friday and this time he took off more parts and switched the water completely off in the whole house. He has not been seen since. I received a call from the Post Office who advised me that it will take 7 to 10 days for the part to be delivered. I was NOT advised however that there was no water in the house. The toilet does NOT flush and my mum is NOT able to use the shower as there is no water. I called the post office on Friday, Saturday and today and was advised that someone would ring me back. It is now Monday and no one has called me back. My mum is 77 years old, vulnerable and without water in the house. Just an update - On Monday I recieved a vm telling me that the parts had arrived and the Engineer would arrive between 8am and 2pm on Tuesday (yesterday) I called to confirm this on Monday. It is now Wednesday and 11:15 am and now one turned up yesterday. I am currently on hold and have been for over 30 minutes. Reviewed on: 5th September 2022
