Horrendous customer service

Echoing what a lot of people have said here, the customer service is truly terrible. Avoid starting a business account with Santander at all costs! I have no idea how any business properly functions using it. We (foolishly) decided to do the simple action of adding another signatory to our bank a couple of months ago. Since then, our transactions - even if they're standard ones that we always pay - are regularly flagged as security issues, meaning that our online banking access gets blocked. So, you ring up the customer service number and it takes (no exaggeration) roughly 1 hour each time to complete the call. This happens probably every ~2 days at the moment. I asked Santander at one point how long it would be before our account stops getting flagged for security issues and they recognise the new signatory and they said it would be soon but they couldn't tell me exactly how long "for security reasons" (you can't make it up!). The maddest thing is that we sometimes send £90K+ payments and nothing gets flagged, and then a £300 card payment to Dropbox etc. will get flagged and block us out. The worst situation happened about a month ago when our online banking access was blocked and we were told we had to go into a local branch to get it unblocked. I went to the branch, got it unblocked (after about an hour), only to return back to the office to see that the block hadn't been properly lifted. I then called up again (another hour), and the person told me that they thought our online banking details had been accidentally deleted. She said she would send us new online banking details in the post which would take 5-7 days!! In the meantime, all we could do was make all our payments over the telephone, which was an absolute nightmare. I didn't care about complaining because what's the point, but a member of the complaints team contacted me anyway and we chatted through the issue briefly. After a few days I got a letter in the post from them saying that "After investigating the issue, we have come the conclusion that the problem was not the fault of Santander". Honestly. On another occasion, it was insisted that we had to go into branch again to get the bank unblocked. The person I spoke to was super rude about it and wouldn't allow us to unblock our account over the phone. So, I just hung up the phone, called again, spoke to someone else and they cleared up the issue instantly! I could go on and on with similar examples where no two people at Santander say the same thing or know the same things; they are completely incompetent. The only awards that Santander should win: - Longest wait times for a customer service team - Number of times they'll block you out of your own account - Most annoying "on hold" music of all time (honestly, I could sing this tune in my sleep). Terrible service

After setting up a standing order, our business account was locked. I spent two and half hours among several calls waiting to be connected to the relevant team. The security team told me they would raise an internal ticket with their back office to unlock the account immediately. That didn't happen. We will now let down our customers who expect a payment on time. Reviewed on: 29th June 2022

Horrendous customer 'support'

In December I lost £2k in a scam. I have been trying to get my money back ever since and the Santander customer support line is completely useless. Every time I call I get a different response, and in some instances total rudeness (someone told me to 'be quiet'). I thought I was making progress with one conversation, then the next time I called that conversation hadn't been logged. Another time in March I called and got told that my case had been 'declined' in December but I had received a letter that the claim was ongoing in January. Now my case is being passed onto complaints and I have to wait 3-5 days for a callback when it's not even complaints I need to speak to. 30-40 minutes wait time each time I call customer support as well. Worst bank for business needs

We've been with Santander for years and have had no end of issues from terrible customer service, constant blocks on cards for genuine transactions and no blocks for suspicious payments. Their banking dashboard and mobile app suck - you can't see pending transactions, which are commonplace even for the most basic banking services these days. On top of this you can't ask anything through their "secure messaging service" and they always request that you call them due to security reasons. The banking links into Quickbooks are also unreliable and always need updating. At the time of writing I've been sat on their auto-attendant phone line for >20mins after they couldn't even verify my customer ID to ask the simplest question. All in all We're completely fed up with Santander and would advise anyone looking to set up a business account to avoid them. Literally go anywhere else! Reviewed on: 30th March 2022

Santander: How To Win Maximum Customer Loyalty In Minimum Time...

"I have done business in over 150 countries worldwide, with a multitude of banks and financial institutions, and worked in The City Of London for many years. During that time I've kissed a LOT of financial 'frogs' and almost none of them turned into princesses - until I registered for a Santander business acount. The ease of use of this account and its user-friendly interface is without parallel - as the Martini ad (one for the kids) said, you can do business 'anytime, anyplace, anywhere' (not as common as you might think) and the fees are so low as to be almost non-existent. There are precious few banks I would recommend, and even fewer I would trust with my money, but Santander is most definitely one of them - they have my highest recommendation." Local Branch in Wanstead Now Closed

Had a letter saying that my local branch in Wanstead was closing and that my nearest branch would now be in Leytonstone, a bus ride away. I was also informed that my new branch manager was a Mr Patel, no surprise there... As a pensioner with limited mobility it is disgraceful that I am now expected to travel much further, to a somewhat questionable area that is rife with criminal activity and muggings, particularly on the elderly. I will certainly not be visiting Mr Patel any time soon. Reviewed on: 11th February 2022

Absolute worst experience

We have two business bank accounts with Santander, for companies in the same group. We tried to open a third account, for a new company we acquired. It has been 13 weeks to date, and not one person in the team is able to tell us why it is taking so long. What's more, they have now asked us to recertify our other two accounts as well! The communication is shockingly bad. *Turnover >£5m. Reviewed on: 19th November 2021

ABYSMAL CUSTOMER SERVICE

2 hours on hold, then nothing gets done. Account blocked for no reason at all. Submitted all required information, still blocked. Just use one of the new fintechs, the old model of banking is broken. Reviewed on: 12th August 2021

Fine for our needs, but useless phone app

We have had no more bad experiences in our many years of business banking than with the other banks we’ve used in the past. BUT the main point of this review is to say that their iPhone app is virtually useless other than for checking your transactions. You can’t pay anyone you haven’t paid before, and you can’t even search for the payees that have paid before! Reviewed on: 10th July 2021

Not ready for business banking

I have the following business accounts: Starling, Tide, Natwest and Santander. To say that Santander is terrible would be an understatement. As a matter of fact, the other 3 providers in the list above should be assessed completely separately. The interface of Santander Business Accounts (browser or app) is archaic. The reliability is the worst I have ever seen; 1 out of every 4 / 5 transactions times out or is not processed due to 'technical reasons'. The website is regularly completely glitching out. I honestly cannot emphasise enough to avoid business banking with Santander. The biggest irony being that they're the only business banking provider from the list above which CHARGES £7.50 as a flat fee for its services. Reviewed on: 7th July 2021
