DO NOT OPEN an account

DO NOT OPEN an account with Santander. This is the worst bank ever. I have Barclays from three years and I never had any problem since I opened the account. I just wanted a backup account and I thought Santander was a good bank as they have all those nice looking branches but I guess the say “never judge a book by its cover” it’s true. I opened the account online and it wasn’t easy at all. I had to post them the copies of the documents required as the “Upload” option on the website was not working. After waited almost a week for a response, for the account to be opened and for all the letters that I received (4 in total) I tried to login into my account and it was basically blocked. I dealt with three different people in the Customer Service to understand what was going on as I just opened the account but the answer was the same “We don’t know what happened. There is a block in your account for security purpose. The security team will sort it out”. Well, I waited almost a month for this problem to be fixed and in the end I just opened an account (very easy, 5 minutes in total) with Lloyds and I called Santander to close my account which will be impossible for sure as I saw online that a lot of people are trying to close an account with them unsuccessfully. I have two bank accounts and a mortgage with Santander - I chose them initially because of geographic location in relation to the village I was moving to - I soon learned how friendly and efficient the staff in my local branch are . Nothing is too much trouble and they helpfully suggest other ways the bank can help with different solutions and products to suit my needs - but without being the pushy all about sales type - the personal touch makes a real difference to my banking experience Reviewed on: 16th April 2021

Long waits

Terrible service

Absolutely shocking service. Handling of our mortgage was handed to a third party who messed up a lot of things and eventually led Santander to extend our completion date otherwise it wouldn't have gone through. But they did little to help the situation or get back to our complaints. It's clear all their products are geared towards high earners Reviewed on: 30th March 2021

How to lose a Customer

I'd give no stars, if possible. Stay away from this bank, if you're self-employed. My husband and I had a mortgage with Santander for over 2 years, until we decided to move to a bigger property in the middle of the pandemic. We only asked to port our existing mortgage, as we were going to pay an additional deposit, which meant the loan to value would significantly reduce. With a chain of 5 people waiting for Santander to give a decision, it was a very stressful time. As my husband is self-employed, they kept asking for further information. First, they offered 20% less than expected and then, for a shorter lending period (by 2 months!). Both times, we agreed within 1 hour, but every time they advised the underwriting team would take another 10 working days to assess. Please note my husband continued to work throughout the pandemic. After 3 months and a third request to reassess the case, we were so concerned about losing the property and missing the stamp duty holiday, that our broker suggested we tried another lender. We contacted Halifax and within 4 working days we had an agreement in place! Santander had the most appalling service. I never write reviews, but I had to do this one. Just awful, unhelpful, shambles of a mortgage lender. Please don't yourself through it. Months of going back and forth. Halifax sorted in less than 30 seconds. I could talk for hours about how bad this company is! Reviewed on: 10th March 2021

Awful Service

If I could give no stars then I would. I had been with Santander for 5 years for a mortgage making regular payments each month and never having a late payment., we also have been overpaying each month for the last 2 years. Right the way through lockdown me and my wife have been working right through and never been furloughed. I rang Santander in October to see if we were able to borrow more money there first phone call which lasted 30 minutes they stated how much we could borrow and we had passed the MIP. We then proceeded to put an offer in on a property and start the mortgage process. We waited 3 weeks for a mortgage advisor to call us to discuss the application and to tell us rates etc which the call lasted another 60 minutes. He then said that were were still eligible for a mortgage. I then waited a further 2 weeks for a decision to be then told that they were unable to provide a mortgage because as being a company director they said that because of COVID that they were predicting that the company accounts net profit would be down for the following financial year without having any proof of this. I found this really difficult to believe that they would deny us a mortgage because of the prediction. I appealed against the decision and they offered me £100 compensation because they said that they could have answered me faster. I find it quite annoying that I was offering them over £80k deposit and still they refuse me after saying that I was okay. I then went onto Barclays and successfully got a mortgage within 6 weeks. We then had to pay nearly £2500 to get out the mortgage with Santander which i am in the process of taking them to the ombudsman to get my money back . All the stress they have caused me plus we nearly lost the house because of Santander. I am absolutely disgusted with them. Reviewed on: 24th February 2021
