Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

Don't let pressure of debt weigh you down

It took me a while to decide to seek debt advice and on reflecting should have done that much earlier. It gave me new perspectives on dealing with the pressure of debt and lifted a burden that was having real impact on well-being. It is worth every effort to seek help and advice and not be weighed down by debt. With the right advice and action, debt can be managed and by matter of time, it will be a story of the past. I cannot recommend StepChange highly enough. They helped me through a very difficult debt situation and continue to act as a mediator between myself and my creditors. From the very beginning, they provided clear, practical advice and an excellent level of service. I was extremely nervous about contacting them and kept putting it off until I had reached crisis point. Looking back, I wish I had contacted them much sooner. The team were reassuring, understanding and completely non-judgemental. They took the time to explain my options, helped me put a plan in place, and gave me peace of mind during what was a very stressful period.
