Good service but long wait times for their helpline

Stepchange provide a very good service although at times they are very difficult to talk to-for instance I rang today and a message was give out that my wait time was 2 minutes but 20 minutes later I was still waiting. About ever 5 minutes the same message (your wait time is 2 minutes) was given out which was very frustrating. Reviewed on: 23rd June 2026

You can not get in touch over the phone unless it’s early morning or you are in luck, meaning it would be time off work to call. When I have got through they have always advised me that the payment plan would close if there were so many missed payments but mine would not as it was down to Ill health and missing work and then having no wage. Despite being told not to worry, they then randomly closed my plan anyway, leaving me with trying to juggle debt, be a single parent and have ill health all on my own. Again when I tried to call they couldn’t answer. Reviewed on: 22nd June 2026

whilst setting up my DMP Step Change couldnt have been more helpful, and the advice given was clear and concise. I found filling in the budget form very easy to navigate and you have the option to review your expenditure and alter the form accordingly. Debt free in 4 months thanks to StepChange!

I am incredibly satisfied with the support I’ve received from StepChange. Their customer service has been excellent throughout my journey. I felt a bit daunted and embarassed, so kept putting off ringing Stepchange. But I finally did it, and I really wish I had done it sooner. The person I spoke to was non-judgemental, kind, and put me at ease throughout the call, I really felt I was in good hands and I felt so, so relieved to have made that call and that my financial situation was going to be manageable, and that there was light at the end of the tunnel, instead of a bottomless pit.
