Review of the NatWest, Fixed Rate Mortgage:

Good app, good communication

I primarily use the app for checking on my mortgage, works well and the information is clear Reviewed on: 8th February 2023

Zero rating

1
It's validating to be able to leave NatWest a review score of zero. I'm tied in to their mortgage with no real prospect of escaping, and they are quite literally ruining my life with their constant errors - wrong amount taken on direct debit, no direct debit taken at all, requiring me to make manual payments when they mess up the direct debit, failing to apply the payments to my account, then hounding me for payment of the amounts that I've already paid. They actually reported one of these monthly debacles to credit reference agencies as a missed payment! In 2023 they did this for six consecutive months, so I ended up taking them to the Financial Ombudsman, who ordered them to pay me a load of compensation. But this year, they've started all over again. I've spent more than ten hours on the phone to them so far in 2024, and the customer service is worse than ever. One member of staff actually blamed me for the error! They'd overcharged me, emptying my bank account and putting me into unauthorised overdraft with my bank, told me reverse the direct debit and make a manual payment for the correct amount instead, sent me an email receipt for payment, didn't apply the payment to my account, then sent me arrears letters telling me I hadn't paid. I literally had a receipt, but they argued that because I hadn't made the payment "correctly" then it was actually a late payment! It's exhausting. Reviewed on: 7th April 2024

Every 2 yrs NATWEST cancels my contract agreement without telling me. Then they send ascent agent to knock on my door unexpectedly! Imagine if imtravelling...they will pobably just repossess! So then I have to go through the process of putting a new agreement in place again which is a long and horrifying process of going through all my income!! Reviewed on: 14th March 2024

Warning.

1
Warning. If you are a sole trader in a legitimate, cash based business DO NOT approach this company for a mortgage. If, like me, you declare your cash takings but choose not to travel 50 miles to the only bank branch still open to deposit them - your bank deposits will not necessarily match your turnover. This problem will only increase because cash is not dying out whereas banks are closing down. This lender has refused to accept the word of HMRC and the SA302s . They have spent over six weeks faffing around before asking for audited accounts, which they should really have done from the outset. Even then there is still no promise of a mortgage at the end of it. Furthermore they are now expecting to see a regular salary being drawn. This is rarely the case with a sole trader, nor is it a requirement of HMRC. My position with the lender has become completely untenable and the application has now been withdrawn. My personal opinion is that this lender shows little understanding of self employment and I advise you to look elsewhere. Reviewed on: 17th January 2024

Good price fixed-rate.

Natwest provided a competitive rate on a 5-year fixed mortgage, and their app is also extremely easy to use. Reviewed on: 3rd August 2023

I wish I could give zero stars

1
Me and my partner have been treated absolutely awfully during the entire mortgage process, we supplied all of the required paperwork and documents and filled everything out correctly and were left with no news for almost two weeks, we then rang them only to be told we hadn’t selected our marketing preference (which we had) they said it would all be sorted and a few days later we were told they were going to start running our credit checks, almost a week later we have now been told that they’re not going to give us the mortgage for the following reasons: we have a credit card in default, one of us had a bank account with NatWest in 2018 that’s in default, neither of these things are true, neither of us has EVER banked with NatWest and neither of us have or have had a credit card that is defaulted. When we tried to tell the lady on the phone this she hung up. We’ve since been to talk to an independent mortgage advisor who said the same thing has happened to 3 other people in the last week with NatWest. It’s unacceptable that you’re trying to drop people who were promised a certain/lower mortgage rate because you want them to take the higher interest ones. Reviewed on: 12th July 2023

Great Fixed Rate

5
Got a great fixed rate mortgage 5 months before it was due for renewal last year, saving me £100s as the rates kept going up but the mortgage was guaranteed till renewal. All renewed online, did not have to do any work! Reviewed on: 8th July 2023

No support whatsoever for vulnerable customers

1
When you get a cancer diagnosis and you have to stop working, you really aren't prepared for the financial difficulties you have you deal with. NatWest mortgage 'support' has made life more difficult and frustrating than I could ever have imagined possible. I have literally had to fight them at every turn just to make the payments. I haven't defaulted. I haven't gone into arrears. I just needed to change the way I paid. Six months, and five formal complaints later I've had to refer the whole nightmare to the FO. They have sucked the very life out of me. But I'm too ill to work, so I can't take my custom elsewhere. I'm chained to this purgatory, probably for the rest of my life. Reviewed on: 11th June 2023

Simple process

5
We’ve banked with NatWest for 15+ years and have now remortgaged with them. Simple process and a decent fixed rate/term considering the current financial uncertainty. Reviewed on: 1st June 2023
