About this product

The Better Off Calculator is a tool that quickly calculates your benefit entitlement and shows you what money you may be missing out on. It shows you what steps you can take to strengthen your finances with a focus on actionable advice.

You can use the free calculator to see what help you are eligible for, and see clearly how changes in earnings or hours will impact your income.

If you're an advisor you can get more features in our professional calculator so that you can work out the exact amount of next Universal Credit payments, and create personalised action plans and smart budgets for customers.

With the Better Off Calculator you don’t need to be a policy expert to understand what changes to the welfare system mean for you.

Review of the Policy in Practice, Better Off Calculator:

Useful Tool

A fact not often realised is that those on low income have to manage the minutiae of expenditure with greater precision than the affluent. This tool is a useful way to help people balance their budgets and get information on available benefits. Reviewed on: 28th June 2023

life changes

i use the boc in my work every single day it is such a good tool to show how my clients income will increase and i can do it for some may different scenarios adding on travel and food costs so they can see what they will be actually taking home after deductions... this gives them more motivation to find suitable job roles. it gives them ideas as to what life can be like with the income change and also shows that for many especially with families that benefits dont always come to a stop. showing them that if they made the right change they can go on holiday, they can afford to learn to drive, they can go out with mates more often how it can be life changing for them Reviewed on: 12th July 2025

Highly recommended tool, to understand circumstances

4
Whilst working as an Employment Advisor, I would recommend this tool to all my participants. Nearly all of my participants found this tool extremely useful, as those that were really struggling found that they were entitled to other benefits. This also really helped those who wanted to change their circumstances by being able to understand what effect it would have on their Universal credit. I found that this tool really helped individuals to make decisions, and feel more confident as one of the biggest worries for some was not getting financial support once they start work. Helping me show participants what they are missing

I have found that using this tool has been extremely helpful for me in illustrating to participants the benefits of being in reliable work. I have been able to visually illustrate the benefits of working and bring to life how different their lives could be Reviewed on: 11th July 2025

A Game Changer in Supporting individuals

5
I use Policy in Practice every day in my work, and it makes everything so much easier. My main role involves working with individuals who are currently homeless and want to move into a home through the housing association I work for. It allows me to see how much support they qualify for and helps me budget with them for when they eventually secure a home with us. It's even useful for personal budgeting for myself, family, and friends. Thanks to Policy in Practice, I've been able to support many people. Reviewed on: 11th July 2025
