Terrible Paid insurance for years. My dog was put to sleep recently - tried to claim of insurance & told not possible to claim as my dog was over 8yrs old !!! Reviewed on: 9th October 2023

More Like Animal Enemies

I feel they should be called 'Animal enemies'. Reading posts on here, it seems there is a pattern of not paying out..... Due to CoVid-19 our vets refused the groom our long-haired cats coat, advising I would have to do it. It got so bad the cat was in distress, so I tried to remove one large matted clump of fur which was hard to see & puss was struggling. I unfortunately caused an accidental wound requiring stitches from an emergency vets. Four nights later he had projectile vomiting and was dehydrafted so had to go back for more treatment. Believe it or not Animal friends refused both claims, saying they were linked, and that they don't cover 'grooming'. I've asked for a review saying it wasn't grooming, and the vets wrote 2 letters to them saying it was accidental injury in understandable but very unusual circumstances and emergency surgery was required, imploring them to cover the claim, but they won't change their opinion. I have now taken the time to read through all the policy paperwork and the policy with Animal friends does have some very unhelpful clauses. These include that under vets fees it states that if out of hours charges for vets fees are being contemplated, not only must a pre-authorisation be obtained but also that they will not cover out of hours charges unless the animal is in a life threatening condition. If one would assume that might not for instance include a broken leg or similar injury, I find it quite shocking that there terms could result in an animal suffering over a weekend needlessly. After this experience we will be looking elsewhere for insurance for our cat and I would advise anyone to read terms VERY carefully before selecting ‘Animal Friends’ who I do not believe are as friendly as they claim! I have been with Animal Friends for 10 years and at first I was very happy with them. In the lat 12 months I have had to contact them twice once for my dog, who I have been paying for 10 years and they only paid a percentage of the cost. Second for my cat who I took to the out of hours vet which cost me £316.42 and even with a Superior Plus policy they paid me £70.95!!! They only pay for life threatening conditions. I believed it was or would have waited for my vet to open. She had severe diarrhoea and was floppy, I could see her going downhill fast. Read ALL the small print and then go with someone else. okay price but a bit OTT on restrictions

Have 2 cats, the older one is insured through Animal Friends as they offered the most competitive price at the time I took out the insurance. When my youngest cat came to me from the Cats Protection League I felt it easiest to insure him with Animal Friends too and the monthly premium still remains reasonable. However when he first moved in he had a couple of episodes of blood in his faeces. He was checked out thoroughly by the vet who found no cause for concern and said it was probably just down to a change of diet. Indeed he had no further problems. I should have kept my mouth shut when I was asked if any medical history as they immediately seized on this to exclude gut problems from the insurance. Rather OTT, I thought and doesn't encourage me to be open and honest in the future. Reviewed on: 15th September 2019

Fantastic Simple Pet Insurance

I have found using Animal Friends a very smooth process when I have unfortunately had to claim for my dog who has allergies. They have paid out for various treatments relating to my dogs allergies, I don’t know what I would have done if my dog was not insured as the vets bills would have caused a massive financial stain on my family for our much loved pooch!
