Poor processes, poor ethics - would avoid

This review is being written by somebody who works at a senior level in the mortgage industry. I have recently been supporting a vulnerable family member handle a mortgage issue with Barclays and I have been astounded at how badly they've been treated by Barclays. Their internal processes break down time and time again which only leads to them dealing in a more and more aggressive way with the customer when things aren't resolved. Banks are huge businesses and sometimes good intentions inevitably fall down because of large scale processes. When that happens, it's the role of senior management and complaints teams to step in and make sure the 'right thing' happens and that the bank is meeting it's legal, regulatory and ethical responsibilities. Indeed they proudly promote their values online. Barclays have had dozens of opportunities to do this but have treated the customer extremely harshly and punished them for their own internal mistakes. Compensation provided was paltry as they claimed to be unable to accurately calculate interest costs. Having seen what I've seen now I would recommend to avoid at all costs.. Extremely poor service from Barclays for my fixed mo...

Extremely poor service from Barclays for my fixed mortgage. They provided a free solicitor but I ended up paying £583 to the solicitor for rent charge and indemnity insurance and other services. Raised twice with Barclays and spent at least 3 hours. Everytime they will promise something and don't deliver. Like on 5th June I was told by customer service that someone from underwriting team will contact me but no one did. On 15th June I was promised that they will send me letter that Barclays didn't request any insurance to solicitor. Never received such letter. Today I called and agent was laughing. Had mortgage with Santander in past and was twice remortgaged again with Santander. Never had to pay a dime extra. Reviewed on: 27th June 2026

Great mortgage application

Shared Ownership Mortgage

Do not use Barcleys, not to be trusted

Got a redemption value to pay mortgage off 11th December, paid within one hour, App showed all correctly, then Barcleys took another direct debit on 19th, and the whole system has now spoilt Christmas new year everything, the customer services can do nothing and as with all banks the decision makers are hiding behind the phones.
