Disaster of a credit card company - total fail! We recently tried adding our John Lewis Partnership Card to Apple Pay, only to find it blocked by NewDay, the card provider. Shockingly, this happened... Read more Reviewed on: 24th December 2024

Review of the John Lewis, Partnership Card:

"JLP" aka Just Lost Plot.

1
Thanks to Newday telling me I am ineligible for the new JL Partnership card despite excellent credit score, 5 figure credit limit, etc, etc 31 October 2022 will mark the end of my JL Partnership card and circa 50 years loyal relationship with JL/W. Thereafter I won't be think of JL or W as my first port of call whenever Ii buy anything, No more recommending JL and/or W. It'll be just another shop which once upon a time had what it took but is no more. I have extolled the virtues of Newday on this board and other sites so the high esteem in which I hold Newday is renowned. As a gesture of goodwill to anyone that may not know this - I didn't until last week - a credit score fluctuates, depending upon how much of one's credit limit has been used at the time. For example if your credit limit is £10,000 and according to the soft check (meaning that your credit score isn't affected) the score is excellent, it doesn't matter that you pay the whole of the balance on each statement. What matters to the credit score is how much of the credit you have used at the date/time you check your credit score. Paying the whole of the balance is past performance: it does not create a binding precedent for the future. Until you receive your next statement and pay the balance on that statement, as far as the credit score is concerned you owe x% of the limit with no certainty whether the amount owed would be repaid in full by the payment date. The existing JL Partnership card can be used as an ordinary credit but really it's a store card that, because it is provided by HSBC, can be used as credit card anywhere. (Unlike Newday's version which can't.) JLP is not the most worldly organisation so probably would never have envisaged let alone intended that its cardholders would spend perhaps the bulk of the credit limit elsewhere and only a relatively small proportion at JL/W. But by so doing cardholders get JLP vouchers regardless, meaning that over the course of a year a high spending cardholder could easily accumulate more than £100 in vouchers to be redeemed at JL /W without having bought anything at JL/W. (I used to get more than £200 vouchers which I saved for use at Christmas.) It is advisable to close your credit card account with JLP before the expiry date otherwise the credit score might be told the bank has cancelled it in which case your credit score would be affected adversely. Just for fun, I am considering this paying all but £1 of the balance due and leave the £1 outstanding and gathering interest for years to come. Or until HBC write it off which the earlier. A total embarrassment

1
After receiving the new credit card i activated it & tried to use it the following day to buy an expensive item utilising the 6 month interest free period. However the card was declined & told me to ring the cc fraud line. As I was with the retailer at the time I had to use another card without the interest free period which went through without any trouble. I did eventually ring the number & asked them to send me details of their complaints process. - I am still waiting after nearly 2 weeks. I have now cancelled the card. A complete waste of time. App not working

1
I tried to book the last available flight to join friends on holiday. Got to the final screen to pay and couldn’t get authentication from the JL card app ‘Technical issues’, so rang the number on their message - an automated response that they were closed. Lost my holiday. Utterly hopeless. Reviewed on: 13th September 2023

What a shambles!!

1
I had a John Lewis credit card for many years with no problems whatsoever. As soon as I had the new one, each time I tried to pay off my account at the end of the month I found my account was blocked. Then I had to contend with the tedious calls to get unblocked, then next time, same thing. After three months of this I cancelled and am now with Halifax. What were the management thinking?? could'nt be worse - a nightmare card issuer

1
Newday agreed to block a scam supplier and refund - then they failed to do so. Complained, and they said - resubmit!! Then they blocked the wrong card (mine rather than my wife's) resulting in huge amount of work to re-enter details of all regular payments - that is, from when the new card arrives. JLP - you really made a big mistake in changing suppliers. Also, get rid of that dreadful phone access menu. Reviewed on: 9th September 2023

Newday credit card much worse than the old JLP card

1
Since JLP changed credit card provider to Newday we have had only problems. We are bombarded with useless e-mails to the extent that you don't always see the important ones. Paying the account has become a nightmare, we always pay off the balance but if anything is incorrect in a long complicated account reference the Newday bank (Santander) just bounces the money back and a few days later you find your account blocked for non payment. This has happened three times now and no, I don't want to pay by DD, I like to check the account first. Thinking of cutting up this card! Reviewed on: 8th September 2023

Is this the worst credit card provider in the world?

1
John Lewis’s decision to save money in switching its card service provision to Newday must rank as one of the worst corporate decisions among a seemingly never-ending litany of the most dreadful self-induced acts of corporate self-destruction. Newday is surely the Fawlty Towers of the financial world, although this constitutes a disservice to John Cleese, while Andrew Sachs’ Manuel was more helpful and customer-friendly than Newday’s telephone assistants. Please, somebody tell me that this is all a John Lewis joke that has misfired, and that we will all eventually return to the comfort blanket of HSBC in its guise as the JLP card service provider. Ps we really should be able to allocate ‘no stars’ as ‘1 star’ suggests that the incompetent Newday is at least getting something right….which it is not! Reviewed on: 2nd September 2023

Not even a one star service

Been a loyal JL cardholder for many years. Just tried to renew with NewDay. Application sent me round in circles so I rang their helpline. Only to discover it's defunct and there's no alternative number. Total joke. Reviewed on: 1st September 2023

'NEW DAY FRAUD DEPARTMENT': terrible, terrible service - an absolute joke...

1
Like SO many other John Lewis customers I have been a contented JL credit card-holder for many years, but the day you decided to change management to these New Day people was a very dark day indeed. During their tenure I have had a several dire and inefficient encounters with them over many months - even though I clear the full amount of my expenditure in full each month - and now their Fraud Department has accused me of having authorised a fraudulent item on my statement. My first concern had been to instigate an immediate block on my card, as it was obvious to me that 'someone out there' had scammed my card details and knew how to make it look like I was authorising their use of it. I reported the fraud and expected an immediate block to be put on future use of my card, but then had to chase them a day later before this was done. I know I did not make any purchase from this ‘business-to-business' electrical company* in Montpellier, France, but because I noticed an item on my statement that was not one of mine and asked for it to be investigated I understand my own credit rating may now suffer as a result. * Sonepar is an independent family-owned company with global market leadership in B-to-B distribution of electrical products, solutions and related services. To call themselves a bank is one of the funniest jokes I’ve heard in a while - they are most certainly not worthy of the label. If I had had <any> residual doubts about giving up my JL credit card, 'New Day' have done a marvellous job of disabusing me of any such doubt. App deleted, card snipped in two, Halifax card en route. Can I give a multi-minus star rating? Just so very bad!!!

1
Please John Lewis, find another provider - the move to New Day was such a bad decision. So many, many reasons why this provider is inappropriate for your customer base, but here's a few: - credit card contactless rarely works which is inconvenient - we clear our balance monthly and have no debts whatsoever, but can't get a credit small increase because 2 of us are on the same account to gain more points, and no one will tell us why - their business focuses on lending to lower income customers, which isn't our profile or that of many JL customers I imagine I used the JL credit card for many, many years when HSBC was the provider and it was a really positive experience ... PLEASE rethink your choice of provider JL, before we have to leave your financial services for other, more customer-focused, providers Reviewed on: 27th August 2023

Shockingly Bad

I have been a loyal JL cardholder for as long as I can recall. I attempted to switch to NewDay in May and my application has been in limbo since. New Day claims that 'my credit history' needs to expire my application, which is improbable and bizarre. Meanwhile, I am unable to progress my application. John Lewis, what have you done? What a shambles! Reviewed on: 25th August 2023
