Review of the Santander, Mortgage:

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

1
Santander bought my mortgage from another company. So I will start with that as I did not SEEK them out initially. I ended up with them. I contacted them to remove PMI (as I was below 80% and it was supposed to be automatically dropped). A letter from their agency confirmed, that indeed I was at 73% and the PMI should not be in place. Indicated that in order to remove PMI I would need appraisal. Follow-up call – spoke to a representative who stated ‘ I don't know why you have to have this done, but this is the fee’. I paid the $450 fee (sent WITH tracking) and they cannot locate my package (after tracking indicated they have had it for a week). I called them on the 10th and was told they JUST found the package while on the call and dated my payment, in their system, as 11/10 and not the real date they rec'd package (11/3 @ 9:43 AM). PMI is finally removed successfully and I ask, for a second time, to have escrow removed as it was denied the first time due to PMI in place. NOW they want a $406.45 escrow waiver fee for that to be considered. Say it is status quo (except that it is not listed anywhere in my original loan paperwork about such) Nor have I ever paid such fees to other companies. The best is that they are saying even after my escrow is successfully removed from their office (after they receive their extortion fee of $406.45- which is what I will consider it as) I am to reach out to them quarterly (after paying my taxes) and yearly (after paying my Home Owners Insurance) with receipts to PROVE I was successfully able to do so. I am not sure if this bank is confused or not, but I totally don't need to be robbed of my funds for their made-up fees and/or need to prove that I can successfully adult and pay my bills. In all my years of having properties and dealing with multiple banks, this is by far the WORST experience I have ever had with a mortgage company. Not to mention the 'rules' they have put into practice don't even exist with other lenders. Reviewed on: 27th November 2023

My partner and I purchased our first home last year with the help of a Santandar mortgage. Working with Santandar was speedy, easy, and reliable, and I am over the moon with their service. Reviewed on: 25th February 2023

I understand that all mortgage products are the same at the moment but we're with santander and the interest has gone up over 4% over the last 6 months making repayments almost unaffordable Reviewed on: 23rd February 2023

Disaster

My morrgage was up for renewal from 2nd of January. Before renewing I wanted to make an overpayment and then renew the mortgage. Santander do not deal with mortgages in their branches so the only way to renew is over the phone or through the banking App. Phone banking is a complete nightmare with long waiting being cut off and having to phone again and wait again hours of time wasting....the banking App does not function properly and you have to wait days/weeks for updates. I made £33,000 overpayment but my outstanding balance increased from £298,000 to £370,000 all they said is wait for the account to update...I wanted to pay another overpayment but none of the mortgage advisors could calculate how this would effect my mortgage. It took until mid February for my mortgage account to update by then interest rates had gone up they offered me £100 for the compensation of all faults occured nothing for the extra rate increase. They are not interested in resolving problems, phone banking hours waiting, branches not interested. Complete disaster I have reported them to The Ombudsman will take it as far as I can...stay away! I have been with Santander for nearly 40 years and always enjoyed unrivalled service. I recently wrapped up my mortgage after selling my home and the advisors I spoke to couldn't have been any more helpful and courteous. I would not bank elsewhere due to the service which is consistently offered. Reviewed on: 2nd February 2023

Never helpful, always issues

I've had several products with Santander over the years and this will be my last one. Staff are rude and only care if you are super wealthy. The palmed off the sorting of our mortgage to another company who were so poor Santander had to extend our completion date twice as they were going so slowly. When consulting on a new bank account with them the member of staff would only talk to my partner and ignored me as I am female. Reviewed on: 2nd February 2023

Avoid, Avoid, Avoid!

Please avoid this bank! They are a complete nightmare! Applied for mortgage only 40% of house asking price as we have 60% of deposit. They are giving us the complete run around. Conversation I had yesterday with them was them telling me to rent close to the area we want to buy a house, and then apply for mortgage!! Doesn’t matter that we are transferring our jobs (with our employers) apparently we have to transfer, rent and then apply!! Oh to top it off, FIND A NEW HOUSE TO BUY!! Reviewed on: 23rd October 2022
