Helped me sort my mortgage with no problems

Santander has been my mortgage provider since 2011, during this time I have had 2 fixed mortgages with them. I found the initial set up straightforward, although I did have help from a broker to do this. They gave a very competitive rate at the time, and all went very smoothly with the purchase of the house. I called them when the first fixed term was up, and asked what they could offer as a remortgage, and they again were able to offer a very competitive product, and I continued as a customer. The process, again, was very straightforward, My experience of their call centre for arranging this was ok, however sometimes it took a while to get through to a person, and on one occasion I got through not long before closing time and was asked to call back the next day, which I was not impressed by. I insisted that someone call me back so that I didn't have to sit on hold again, and they did. Once I was able to speak to someone, I found the staff very helpful. Although I have a fixed product, I am able to make overpayments of up to 10% per year, which I can do either in the branch or over the phone. When I have called to do this or make enquiries about how much I can over pay, my experience of using the call center has been positive. Overall, if they are offering you a good rate, I would say they are worth looking into for a mortgage. Reviewed on: 25th August 2015

Really room for improvement here

before beginning a Santander mortgage application I think everyone should do research. I found the santander application too long and information is not always clear, but didn't want to drop the application and start again somewhere else so continued with it Reviewed on: 1st July 2015

Worst Company Ever! Avoid if you are a first time buyer

My Partner and myself recently applied to Santander for a new mortgage on the help to buy scheme for new build properties. They gave us a promise that their is no problems whatsoever and we can proceed to find a new build property. after we have found the new-build, our dream house that ticketed all the boxes, we proceeded to complete the mortgage application. After an initial yes, and got all the other paperwork and solicitors and everything else in order, paid for the survey and all these things, they suddenly withdrawn the mortgage. just like that! It was not a affordability issue or a credit issue. after a lot of fighting with them we eventually find out that the underwrites had the wrong address history and they could not find us on the credit file and then declined it on that basis. The address was correctly given on the application paperwork. it is clear that someone in administration has made an error and typed 54 in stead of 45. Stander will not review or accept the appeal. "they sympathise with our situation and can clearly see that it was a innocent clerical error however we can not appeal the decision. Our decision is final and it is because of the incorrect address history" Even though it was their error, they refuse to take another look at his application. We also are not getting any money back. WE have lost £1000's in fees both with the solicitors and the builders that we are not getting back, and we have lost our house because the builders does not want to wait for a new mortgage application being done with a new lender. Because the computer is saying "no" because the computer was given inaccurate information Santander says NO. Even-though they have acknowledge that there was an error, they still say no. Never in my Life have I dealt with an company that was so in-human and bullying as Santander. I am at a loss for words to the this. If you are a first time buyer, please avoid like the plague, they will cost you a lot of money that you may not have and will take you years to save up again. Thanks for ruining this for us Santander. You are truly part of these evil banks that we all have got to known these past years. Reviewed on: 6th March 2015

Beyond appalling - avoid avoid avoid. 0/10

Santander is, without doubt, the most appalling company, let alone mortgage provider that I have ever dealt with - and after being a customer for more than 20 years, the fact that their customer service has been so excrutiatingly bad leaves me with a very sour taste in my mouth. My husband and I have a portable mortgage product with them - when it came to moving house, we were assured that the porting of said product would be no problem. That is, of course, until we sold our house and came to move - and since then we have had nothing but trouble from them. In the past 18 months we have been through SO many hoops to try and get them to agree to us porting the mortgage we have, I've lost count. We have sent in pay slips ad infinitum, filled in countless forms, answered questions, even agreed to switch to a repayment basis from interest only, proved income beyond retirement age and we are still no further forwards. We have lost one dream house because the seller couldn't wait for us, are about to lose a second, and will probably lose our buyer as well. We aren't trying to buy a huge property, in fact we are looking to downsize to somewhere smaller and pay off some of our mortgage, so there isn't the excuse that we can't afford it. They simply don't want to honour the terms of the mortgage we have. We have lost count of the number of deadlines that they have set that have whistled past. And no one at their end gives even the slightest care about the fact that they are screwing with our lives. It's fair to say that the overriding feeling I have developed for them is hatred. If anyone has a clue about how we can make headway here, I would love to hear it - and meanwhile, avoid avoid avoid. They have no intention of actually making the process simple and easy. Words can't express how angry the sight of their logo makes me. Reviewed on: 6th February 2015
